Great Performances: The Best of 2019

From Team USA’s Women’s World Cup Win to the Washington Nationals’ first World Series Championship to record shattering times in both the Men’s and Women’s Marathon… 2019 was filled with many an epic sport moment! Here are the 12 pinnacles of the year that had everyone talking… including you!

Team USA wins the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup!

Defending their 2015 title, Team USA won their fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup on July 7th in Paris, defeating the Netherlands 2-0. Scoreless at the half, Team USA took the lead on a penalty kick by Megan Rapinoe at the 62-minute mark, followed up by a second goal by midfielder Rose Lavelle just before the 69-minute mark.

The tournament generated as much attention for the quality of play as the inequality of pay. Despite the US women being ranked number 1 in the world, the US men’s team, currently ranked 30th, earns more when they lose than the women do when they win (Vox Media). In response to this pay disparity, 28 members of the women’s national team sued the US Soccer Federation for gender discrimination on March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day. Crowds could be heard chanting “Equal Pay” throughout the tournament during the games in which the US played.  Read More

5 Simple Fixes!

My edited food journal above may look overwhelming, but the changes come down to a few basic concepts. Back in July we launched a contest offering 2 lucky readers the chance to win a diet makeover by Sarah Wragge, our contributing nutrition editor, with just 5 Simple Fixes. Yes, there are the obvious splurges like pizza, ice cream, and cookies, but lurking in many of our diets are extra hidden calories of which we are completely unaware. I found that out firsthand when I asked Sarah to take a look at my diet.

Thinking I ate pretty clean and expecting a pat on the back, instead I got, “OMG… you eat so much sugar!” Unbeknownst to me, what I thought was my healthy fruit and rice cake snacking was like sugar dosing and carbo loading all day. With some simple substitutions like adding more healthy fats such as avocado and nuts; swapping dairy for plant based alternatives like almond milk and coconut yogurt; and replacing my fruit dessert with dark chocolate (yes!), those abs I work so hard for started to pop — and with no feeling of deprivation because I was eating satiating and nutritious foods.

Our 5 Simple Fixes contest winners, Suzanne Donaldson and Mike Loftus, learned some of the same lessons and few more of their own — along with some easy fixes to attain their fitness and nutrition goals. Our contest should probably have been called “1 Simple Fix” because the leading culprit for all 3 of us was hidden sugar.

We all want to look good and feel good. We want those workouts to show on our bodies. For those of you who entered the contest but didn’t win, we wanted to share a sample 3 days of our diets, with the changes Sarah made. Many of you might have similar habits, and we hope seeing our mistakes and the easy fixes can help you achieve your fitness and nutrition goals too.  Read More

Get More Energy Now!

Everybody wants more energy — and we want it all day! In the insanely busy lives most of us live, balancing the demands of work and home, we go at full speed from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep. We need that energy sustained for our workouts, jobs, kids, and spouse — not just for the body, but also the mind. Whether you’re a busy exec or stay-at-home mom, our physical and psychological demands don’t discriminate.

64% of us start the day with a cup coffee, and the average American drinks about 3-4 cups per day. One cup of coffee is the morning is fine, but drinking too much coffee can have adverse effects, and leave us feeling more exhausted. When we feel tired, our brains do too. Not only is cognitive function impaired, but our emotional stability as well. We’ve all been known to “lose it” when we’re wiped out. The goal is to avoid the highs and the lows.

Since fatigue is not an option, we asked our resident nutrition and wellness guru, Sarah Wragge, for some tips and tricks to have more energy now. The good news is you don’t have to give up that morning brew!  Read More

The E-Fleet Band

FARADAY CORTLAND $2499

Electric bikes, or “e-bikes”, have become one of the most popular categories of bicycles for both fun and commuting, opening the road up to many who might not have previously considered cycling as their mode of recreation or transport before. We’re talking “pedal assist” here, not those motorized bikes your take-out gets delivered on that require no pedaling at all. For those times when you need an extra boost of power while riding, and don’t want to break a sweat — say up a hill on your way to work — the e-bike is the way to go.

In the US, there are three classes of e-bikes defined by the speed and type of power assist. Class 1 bikes have a motor (max 750w) that assists while you’re pedaling and maxes out at 20 mph. Class 3 can assist up to 28 mph. Both are allowed in most states and cities without requiring a license. Class 2 models have throttles that don’t require pedaling in order to get a boost. The miles before recharging, or range of the bike, is determined by how much assist you use.

Most big name cycling companies now offer a class 1 e-bike option, as well many design-oriented bespoke brands, and even urban bike-sharing systems like Citibike have added e-bikes to their fleet. I rode an electric Citibike home from work earlier this week (they’re hard to find!), zipping up Madison Avenue in no time with a “I’m having a blast” look on my face. Even the taxi drivers were smiling at me. Read More

Walking around New York City these days it’s not unusal to see a pair of boxing gloves draped over the shoulder of a fashionably dressed woman. Check out Instagram and you’ll see many a fashion model punching it out with her trainer in sweaty style. From the spa-like Shadowbox, to the speakeasy grungy Overthrow, to long established boxing gyms like Gleasons in Brooklyn — boxing is the hottest workout in town.

Fighters are known for their fitness and ripped physiques. Not only does boxing tone muscles and build full body strength, but it’s a major cardio workout, as anyone who has jump roped or hit the heavy bag for 3 minutes straight can attest. Just one boxing class can burn up to a thousand calories. It’s a sport that requires not just physical but mental discipline as well. Putting together a series of jab-hook-cross-upper cut combinations while bobbing and weaving requires intense focus and concentration, in addition to muscular and cardiovascular strength. The 10 Buzziest Superfoods

Apple cider vinegar, turmeric, activated charcoal, kombucha, and more… you hear people buzzing about these hot wellness favorites all the time! Walk into a smoothie bar and you see matcha on the menu, pick up a magazine and some celebrity is swearing by the miracle benefits of celery juice. We asked Sarah Wragge, our contributing nutrition editor to give us the real deal on 10 of the trendiest foods — and the ones we should be eating now!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar started getting really popular a few years ago, with everybody talking about its health and weight loss benefits. Apple cider vinegar helps control blood sugar levels that lead to cravings, and is said to work as an appetite suppressant when consumed with meals. It contains organic acids and enzymes that help speed up metabolism and can increase the rate at which body fat is burned. It also works to detoxify the body, helping our digestive systems become more efficient.

SAYS SARAH: Like all fermented foods, apple cider vinegar it is a great probiotic remedy — something everyone should be taking for a healthy gut. Know that bloated feeling? Apple cider vinegar helps increase the good bacteria living inside our digestive tract, and fight the bad bacteria which are often the cause. Personally, I’d rather you take a great probiotic – look for one with 10 billion cultures or higher, and at least 5 different bacteria strains. I like Renew Life. For some people, raw vinegar on an empty stomach (when you should be consuming it) doesn’t feel great, especially first thing in the morning.  Read More

CBD Sport

At this point it’s hard to imagine you haven’t heard of CBD – short for cannabidoil – projected to become a 23-billion-dollar business by 2025. This non-psychotropic extract of the cannibis plant produces a sense of calm and relaxation (for many), but without the high, and has become a cure-all consumed in oil and edible forms. Most relevant for athletes, are the CBD sport creams for both injury prevention and muscle recovery.

Now there is a line of CBD creams formulated specifically for before and after your workout – Muscle MX Activate and Muscle MX Recovery – both of which come in a handy stick form, so no greasy hands. With 250mg of CBD in each application, both also have Peppermint Oil, Arnica extract, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree Oil and lots more all natural and organic, therapeutic ingredients.

Activate, applied before your workout, provides pain relief and inflammation reduction, while stimulating blood flow and increasing circulation. Recovery is designed to help prevent and treat muscle soreness and fatigue, inflammation, and minor aches and pains. Both creams go on smooth, are fast-absorbing, and have a refreshing scent.

CBD products tend to work differently for each individual. We’ve found that ones friends swear by, may not have much of an effect on others. For this athlete however, I’ve been slathering it on before and after workouts all summer, and am passing my fave CBD sport cream – or creams – on to you.

Breathe In, Cash Out

BREATHE IN, CASH OUT AUTHOR MADELEINE HENRY

Breathe In, Cash Out is the debut novel by 27-year-old Madeleine Henry that offers an inside and satirical look at both the finance and yoga industry. The book tells the first-person story of a young Wall Street banking analyst, Allegra Cobb, who plans to quit her job as soon she gets her year-end bonus to pursue her real dream of becoming a full-time yoga guru.

What may seem like pursuits at the opposite end of the spectrum – yoga and banking – start to narrow when Allegra meets famed Instagram yogi, Skylar Smith, whose manipulative actions jeopardize whether Allegra will even get that bonus. Both industries get skewered, coming off equally self-absorbed and self-serving.

Globally about 450 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year — most of it single-use — of which 9.5 million tons are thrown into the ocean annually. Both these numbers are on the rise. It has been reported that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans by weight than fish. With sustainability and eco-consciousness a prevalent factor in consumer purchases, many popular sport brands are taking the initiative to reverse those numbers by recycling that plastic waste into new eco-innovative materials and products. A collection of few our favorites are below…

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: CONVERSE RENEW CHUCK TAYLOR ALL STARS $85. From the new Converse Renew collection, these classic Chuck Taylor All Stars are made of 100% recycled polyester from used plastic bottles – and customizable too! Touch em’, wear ’em – Converse swears you’ll never know the difference.

MARINE LAYER RE-SPUN TEE $65. Absurdly soft, all the new tees in the Marine Layer Re-Spun collection are made from donated old tees — reborn by reweaving the fibers with recycled plastic bottles into their own recycled yarn. This retro-inspired ringer boasts the message in flocked collegiate-style lettering. Read More

Finding Balance on Land and Sea

Gina Bradley – aka Paddle Diva – and her so named stand up paddleboard school have become a Hamptons summer staple. For anyone wanting to get into into this popular sport, Paddle Diva offers lessons and guidance for paddlers of all levels. Gina herself has recently jumped into some new waters authoring, Paddle Diva: Ten Guiding Principles to Finding Balance on the Water and in Lifewith the foreword written by Gabby Reece and Laird Hamilton.

Broken down into 10 guiding principles and so titled chapters, such as Dig Deep, Enjoy the Ride, and Look Up — the book is not a how-to guide, but a translation of lessons learned on the water that apply to everyday life. Even I, an experienced paddler, had to draw upon those principles on an extremely windy and choppy day last spring with Gina on the Hudson River, where my primary goal was not to take a plunge into those murky waters. Gina and I sat down for a chat about the book post-paddle… Read More

The Fletcher Family: A Life in Surf

Now on view at Gagosian in New York is the exhibition The Fletcher Family: A Lifetime in Surf, celebrating the soon-to-be published tome of the same title by Rizzoli. The legendary surf and skate dynasty that is the Fletcher family – Herbie and wife Dibi, their sons Christian and Nathan, and grandson Greyson – has been an institution in the action sport culture for decades, with an influence that extends beyond to the worlds of fashion, music, streetwear, and art.

Spanning fifty years of epic stories, photographs, personal ephemera and memorabilia, The Fletcher Family: A Lifetime in Surf is a visual memoir of this immensely colorful “first family” of surfing. Dibi narrates each chapter, accompanied by personal anecdotes about the family from notable contributors such as artist Julien Schnabel, photographer Bruce Weber, surfers Gerry Lopez and Kelly Slater, and the son of one of Vans founders, Steve Van Doren.

In addition to selected imagery featured in the book, Gagosian has installed artworks by Herbie Fletcher called Wrecktangles. These large sculptures have been made from the surfboards ridden — and broken — by the greatest contemporary surfers at the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The board theme recurs in the Wall of Disaster series, which feature masses of skateboards mounted to the wall in anarchic accumulations. Similar to their surfboard counterparts, they form a cacophony of logos and images. Read More

Change Your Mind, Change Your Body

YOUR EDITOR FEELING THOSE SUMMER VIBES!

Elite athletes eat to fuel their bodies for optimal performance and inherently understand the concept that food is fuel. They generally don’t eat something just because it tastes good. They train their bodies like machines, and are not putting bad gas in the tank. Many of the rest of us, however, have gotten away from this basic concept. TV commercials tantalize with images of irresistible fat, sugar, and calorie-laden foods. We order what is most delicious on the menu. We fuel our mouths, but not our bodies.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we all had the performance driven motivation of these athletes? What if it were effortless? For those trying to lose weight, it’s generally thought to be a matter of willpower to resist those foods that have put on the pounds. But what if those foods had no appeal, because not eating them felt so much better that eating them?

I recently shifted to a Paleo diet, which includes meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, and nuts — but no dairy and no grains. That means no bread, which I would have considered impossible a few months ago. But when replaced with delicious and satiating healthy fats like nuts, avocado, and coconut, the temptation has kind of disappeared — especially when my body has leaned out using its fat stores instead of sugar for fuel. Stadium Goods x Sotheby’s

NIKE WAFFLE RACING FLAT MOON SHOE (circa 1972)… $437,500!

July 23, UPDATE: Canadian entrepreneur and investor Miles Nadal scooped up all 41 of the 41 lots, totaling 100 pairs shoes. Initially he passed on the Nike Moon Shoe, purchasing all the others for $850,000, but then grabbed the final pair for a record setting $437,500 – well above the pre-sale estimate of $160,000. The 61-year-old Nadal Nadal plans to display the entire collection at his private museum in Toronto.

Coming off the success of its skateboard auction earlier this year, 20 Years of Supreme, Sotheby’s has partnered with another hypebeast brand in the upcoming auction, Stadium Goods: The Ultimate Sneaker Collection Online.

Stadium Goods is recognized as the world’s premier marketplace for the coveted sneakers that have become valuable collector’s items. From genre-defining collaborations with the most famous athletes, artists, and musicians, the culture of sneaker style has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, and this first of its kind auction will feature the rarest of the rare.

The highlights (and most expensive) of the auction are considered to be the self-lacing 2016 Nike Mag Back To The Future, estimated to go for $50,000-80,000. This once-fictional sneaker worn by Marty McFly in Back To the Future Part 2 is one of only 89 pairs that were produced. From the most sought-after collection in recent years, there is the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 Friends & Family Collection, estimated at $45,000-60,000, that features five rare pairs designed by the multi-platinum rapper. Paddle For Pink

TEAM SOS AT THE HAMPTONS PADDLE FOR PINK

On Saturday, August 3rd, the 8th annual Hamptons Paddle for Pink took place in Sag Harbor, NY. The donations raised by paddlers in this Stand Up Paddleboard race went to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), which is dedicated to ending that diagnosis of breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research. Founded by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1993, BCRF funded research has played a critical role in every major breakthrough in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survival.

The Hamptons Paddle for Pink was founded by Maria Baum — a Sag Harbor resident, mother of four, and breast cancer survivor. Maria is an investor and entrepreneur who created Tutto Il Giorno and Dopo La Spiaggia restaurants, as well as Splash Mixers, following a successful career as a derivatives trader on Wall Street. Maria discovered Stand Up Paddleboarding shortly after being diagnosed with breast cancer and found it to be a therapeutic outlet during her treatment and subsequent recovery. Read More

Lateral Objects

Production designer Stefan Beckman is highly sought-after by the world’s most prominent fashion brands, creating the sets and stages for such designers as Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, and Bottega Veneta – just to name a few. Of note as well are his installations for adidas at Hypefest and ComplexCon — in addition to his editorial work for such publications as Vogue Italia, W, Love, and Interview.

Stefan’s latest project is one of his own creation, a home design line called Lateral Objects, which he has launched just in time for summer with a line of vibrant and sporty beach towels. It is just the first product in a series of home objects soon to come that will include beach umbrellas, glassware, trays, candles, matches, games, and more.

We caught up with Stefan to find out about his inspiration for Lateral Objects, as well as the hot summer pop-up he has curated, Heatwave, now open at Barney’s.

STYLE OF SPORT: How did Lateral Objects come to be?

STEFAN BECKMAN: I’ve always loved home design — furniture and accessories. I used to have a store in Soho called Property, and it just seemed like a natural thing for me to do. I love to challenge myself, and a lot of times I’ll take on projects I’ve never done. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t, but at least I’ve tried. I think the idea for the line is similar. It’s a broad category. I plan to do furniture and accessories, but if there is something interesting and inspiring to me, I can just do it.  Read More

Home Run Jersey

BABE RUTH NEW YORK YANKEES ROAD JERSEY c.1928-30.

Babe Ruth is still breaking records. A New York Yankees jersey worn by the baseball legend sold at auction last Saturday for a record-breaking $5.64 million, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever. Hunt Auctions partnered with Babe Ruth’s family, along with select additions from other collections, to offer the largest assemblage of over 400 personal items and artifacts ever auctioned.

The previous record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia sold was set by another Babe Ruth jersey from 1920, which went for $4,415,658. What made this jersey so special and rare was the fact it was the only time in franchise history when “Yankees” appeared on the front of a road uniform.

“The legacy and significance of Babe Ruth to the game of baseball and American popular culture is unmatched by any other figure in the history of this country,” president of Hunt Auctions David Hunt said in a statement. “While the record-setting prices attained today are certainly astonishing I am not surprised at all given the incredible materials and the mythical status the Babe holds in the history of this country.”

The Nutrition Buzz: Intermittent Fasting

Last month we introduced Sarah Wragge, our contributing nutrition guru who we’ve brought on board to give us the real deal on the latest wellness and nutrition trends buzzing around the fitness universe. “Intermittent fasting” is the trend du jour, which both athletes and those looking to lose weight are integrating into their eating plan. 16:8, Eat Fast Eat, and 5:2 are just a few of the specific types of intermittent fasts which all refer to a schedule of how many hours or days you eat vs. don’t eat — or fast.

Although it’s not a diet per se — as intermittent fasting doesn’t refer to what you eat, but when you eat — the results can be quite dramatic for both sport performance and weight loss. Like all diets however, there is a right and a wrong way to do it. After hearing a friend say she was going to try intermittent fasting because she could eat whatever she wanted all day and then starve until noon (wrong!), I knew we had to get the facts straight for our readers — the pros, cons, and whether it’s right for you.

STYLE OF SPORT: What is intermittent fasting?

SARAH WRAGGE: Intermittent fasting is giving your body a break from food for a certain period of time. There a several different ways to do the fast. The most common is to stop eating at certain time and allow at least 12-16 hours before you eat again. Read More

White Walkers

adidas Originals has just launched the Home of Classics collection, bringing together 10 iconic court-inspired silhouettes, both archival and contemporary, to pay tribute to its lineage of classic white leather sneakers. Celebrating the brand’s most popular models, Home of Classics is led by the Stan Smith, Superstar 80s, and Continental 80 that have transcended cultures and generations to go from performance athletic shoes to coveted fashion sneakers. The lineup also features the Supercourt, Torsion Comp, S.C. Premiere, Nizza RF, Rivalry L0, and A.R. Trainer.

STAN SMITH, THE MAN; STAN SMITH, THE BOOK

Highlighting a few of the models, the Stan Smith is perhaps the world’s most recognized tennis shoe, first released in 1973 and worn by the tennis legend namesake. The recently reissued Continental 80 was first designed in France in 1986 and remixes heritage with modern style in a tonal white on white colorway. The Superstar 80s represents 50 years of adidas court experience, taking numerous design cues from the archive and blending them into a new interpretation. The high-top 1975 basketball shoe Nizza Hi RF has been adopted by skateboarding culture and now features an essential vulcanized rubber sole.

Viewed as a whole, Home of Classics is a retrospective of some of adidas Originals’ most influential designs, and a testament to the timelessness of these sneakers. The collection is now available in store and online at adidas.com.

Turbo Tots!

My sister sent me this Facebook video last week. 6 little girls in motocross helmets were lined up on tiny bicycles behind the starting gate of a race. The clock counted down, gate dropped, and like bullets they took off, with one girl quickly surging to an early lead. Wearing pink leggings and a skirt, her pigtails streaming behind under her helmet, she and the other girls sprinted the straightaways and slid around turns — running, not pedaling, on what are known as balance bikes. My jaw dropped open as I watched them cross the finish line, and I found myself replaying it – again, and again, and again.

Forget training wheels. Balance bikes have become the new way to teach your kid how to ride a bike – and get into competitive racing! Pushing with their feet, balance bikes are pedal-less and low enough to the ground so that kids gain confidence learning how to coast – and balance – on two wheels before they graduate to pedals. Strider has become the biggest selling manufacturer of these balance bikes with over 1.6 million bikes sold and distributed in over 75 countries.

The Strider Cup World Championship and racing series are held across the US and all over the world. With both competitive and non-competitive events, Strider bike races are created to be fun and positive experiences for the entire family. With 2-and-under, 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old classes – it’s huge! And as I watched these little girls haul ass around that track, all I could think was ‘Where was this when I was growing up?’

The Buzz: Could Too Much Exercise Make You Fat?

Collage Images Martin Rusch/Trunk Archive

Keto diet, 10 Day Challenge, Celery Juice… it seems like everyday a new nutrition trend takes the wellness scene by storm. Some of it’s legit and some it’s BS, but we wanted to get the scoop on all to share with our readers. Meet Sarah Wragge, our nutrition wiz, who every month is going to give us the real deal on a variety of different health trends.

Sarah Wragge is a holistic nutritionist and wellness coach who has lived on both sides of the health spectrum. After a 15-year career in advertising, Sarah found herself fed up with steak and martini dinners, and feeling worn out. Having always been drawn towards wellness and nutrition, she ditched the corporate life and decided to make her passion her career — with a particular focus on designing health and nutrition regimens for those same busy execs. What we love is her practical approach to integrating wellness into real life.

One of the buzziest nutrition topics you hear about right now is “over-exercise”. The fitness obsessed — or you might say addicted — daily doubling on SoulCycle classes, going from a cardio to a strength class, working out every day with no rest days off (guilty, as charged). And yet, many of these people are not losing weight. In fact they find the opposite. “I don’t understand… I’m eating so well”, they say, “Why am I getting fat?” Read More

Gerry Cranham: Simply The Best is currently on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London. Now in his 90th year, the work of this British sport photographer defined the genre with pictures that were both intimate and action-packed, capturing the exhilaration and humanity of his sporting subjects.

Over the course of a career which spanned half a century, the range and variety of his sport images cemented Cranham’s reputation as a tireless innovator. Though his reputation rests on his legendary sports images, he also recorded some of the 20th Century’s most dramatic historical and cultural moments, from documenting the funeral of JFK to photographing Steve McQueen at the height of his celebrity. Strtchd & Lymbr

Stretching went Hollywood on Showtime’s Billions last Sunday when a mysterious blond showed up at finance tycoon Bobby Axelrod’s penthouse. We assumed she was there to provide some sort of service, but surprised to find out what it was. When U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades walks in on them and comments, “Here you are dry as a bone after a workout,”Ace replies, “No workout. Kelly just stretches me. She’s the best in the city.” Later in the episode, she would be seen stretching Rhoades.

While having a personal stretcher may be the new luxury for billionaires where once a masseuse’s hands would be, stretching — or getting stretched — has become one of the newest wellness trends to go mainstream with boutique stretching studios popping up across the country. In New York City, you’ve got Stretchd, Racked, and Lymbr — the latter with multiple bi-coastal locations. Nationwide there is Stretch Zone and StretchLab. Read More

Women’s World Cup Heating Up

Today Nike unveiled 14 soccer kits that will take to the field this summer when the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in France. While the fans will be focusing on the style of the kits, the players will paying more attention to the fit on which Nike has working since the last Women’s World Cup. For the first time, these women’s soccer kits were made specifically for them, and are not simply scaled down versions of the men’s team kits.

Nike’s design team worked with team players from a variety of countries to find out firsthand what they were looking for in terms of fit. The players’ precise 4D measurements were captured in the Nike Sports Research Lab, including heat-mapping the areas of their bodies more prone to perspiration to ensure proper ventilation zones. While male soccer players like a slimmer fit, the women were more interested in comfort. They found a V-neck was preferable — not too deep, but with room to pull over a ponytail — and that sleeves needn’t be overly short to be considered feminine. Shorts shouln’t be baggy, but still accommodate those powerful soccer legs.

Shock Therapy

Imagine fitness in the future. You strap on a full body suit – a cross between motocross and scuba gear — equipped with electronic stimulation pads that pulsate and zap your muscles while you workout. Standing in one of 6 spotlights in a darkened room, you watch a screen with exercises to follow, as house music throbs, and a master trainer wirelessly controls how much electrical stimulation is given to each body part. In 30 minutes, a full body workout is delivered in what would have taken been 3 1/2 hours in the gym. Imagine fitness in the future is now.

Shock Therapy Fitness is the first workout to incorporate EMS training – or Electronic Muscle Stimulation – into a group fitness class. Those who have had physical therapy will be familiar with the “Stim” machine as part of their rehab, and EMS training has been popular in gyms throughout Europe for years. It was a company in Germany, Miha Bodytec, that first developed a full body EMS suit. Shock Therapy Fitness has created their own custom Powersuit™ that safely distributes electrical impulses simultaneously to all the major muscle groups throughout the workout for continuous full body training no matter which exercise is being performed. Over 300 muscle groups are activated in one 30-minute class, with 8 to 10 times more contractions than without EMS. Read More

Alex Goes To Hollywood

ALEX HONNOLD

Climber Alex Honnold scaled new heights last night at the 91st Academy Awards as the film about his death-defying climb of El Capitan, Free Solo, took home the Oscar for Best Documentary. Honnold accepted the award with film makers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, appropriately attired in a tuxedo custom made for him by his sponsors at The North Face.

A one-of-a-kind bespoke piece, The North Face Black Series™ Custom Tuxedo combined the premium, modern aesthetic of the Black Series line, with classic suiting tailored for Honnold’s unique climbing physique. The look also featured a stretch cotton poplin shirt – a nod to Honnold’s lifestyle and The North Face performance heritage – along with a subtle tone-on-tone jacquard pocket square and bow tie reflecting the distinct aesthetic of the Black Series™.

The premium lifestyle collection of The North Face, Black Series is inspired by urban exploration and balances utility, modernity and hyper minimalism with the iconic brand’s heritage. Now if we could just see him climb El Capitan in that tuxedo!

Free Solo documents Honnold’s ascent of the freerider route of Yosemite’s El Capitan without the use of ropes or any other protective climbing gear. W.O.W! Working Out With Alysia Reiner

ALYSIA REINER, PATRICIA MORENO, YOUR EDITOR

Photos by Casey Steffens

Fans of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black know Alysia Reiner as the assistant prison warden, Natalie “Fig” Figueroa, one of those antagonistic characters you love to hate on a show. Though probably most recognized for this role, this busy actress and producer has a plethora of other current roles to her credit as well. Alysia stars as Sunny on the new F/X show Better Things; District Attorney Wendy Parks on How To Get Away With Murder; and Lilian Izikoff on Rosewood, just to name a few. She was also one of the stars and producers of the acclaimed 2016 Wall Street film Equity. Other television and film appearances are far too numerous to list, but reading her IMDb page, it kind of seems like she’s been in everything. And to top it all off, she just launched a new fashion line, Livari.

So how does this over-achieving actress, producer, designer, wife, and mother find the time to workout? For Alysia it’s a daily priority and has been since she was a teenager. We first met at SoulCycle, where she is a regular, but HIIT classes, yoga, and Patricia Moreno’s IntenSati are a part of her weekly fitness rotation – the latter to which she brought me for this installment of “W.O.W! Working out With”.

Patricia Moreno is a legendary instructor who has been on the forefront of the fitness industry since the late 1990’s. She started her career at the famed Jeff Martin Studio, and then made her home at Equinox for over 20 years. Patricia’s story deserves a feature in itself, but to share it succinctly, despite being one of the most popular, successful, and well-known fitness instructors, she struggled with her weight and an eating disorder her entire life. On every crazy diet from the age of 10, she became an expert at losing weight, but was never able to maintain it. It was in one devastating moment, outed for her weight gain by the producers of a morning television program on which she was the fitness expert, she realized if she was unable to succeed, how could anyone else? She made it her mission to figure out what was missing and how to create sustainable change.

A Vonn Farewell

Doug Mills/The New York Times

Lindsey Vonn announced her retirement from skiing last week on Instagram in a post that read: “I have always pushed the limits of ski racing and it has allowed me to have amazing success but also dramatic crashes. My body is broken beyond repair and it isn’t letting me have the final season I dreamed of. My body is screaming at me to STOP and it’s time for me to listen”.

Vonn leaves the sport as the greatest female ski racer in history, but for this warrior who famously battled back time and time again from devastating injuries, this early exit not the ending she envisioned. When Vonn said this would be her final season, there was one more record she planned to break before she said farewell — most World Cup wins held by Ingemar Stenmark. And though that didn’t happen, he was there at finish line at her last race today to congratulate her on a storied career.

Coincidentally, another snow sport superstar, Chloe Kim, also announced she was retiring last week, but under polar opposite circumstances. The 2018 Gold Medalist in the Women’s Halfpipe, Kim was the face of the Pyeongchang Games last February. At 17 years old, not only did she live up to the Olympic hype and pressure to become the youngest woman to win a gold medal in the halfpipe, but she did it with unprecedented flair in a run that featured two back-to-back 1080-degree spins — a combination no other woman has ever done in a competition.

31 & Done Days of Digital Fitness!

The 31 Days of Digital Fitness are a officially a wrap! I went into this month having sampled just a few home workouts, and came out having tried them all! The digital fitness market has exploded with online workouts you can stream live or on demand; fitness apps that let you take those workouts to go; and high-tech interactive home gym equipment. Treadmill, barre, Peloton, rowing, HIIT, swimming, yoga, Pilates and more – all these workouts, led by the industry’s top fitness instructors, are now available for the sweating — any place and any time.

The best thing about all of these workouts is the convenience and variety. Try quick Nike Training Club ab blast after SoulCycle or an AloMoves yoga stretch after a run. Ideal for travelers too, bring your favorite workout with you to do in the hotel gym or your room.

People always ask me at the end of these 31 Days features what my favorite workouts are. My usual reply is that it’s not really about me because we all like different things. I may hate barre class, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s a great workout. I may love spinning, but a lot of people hate dancing on a bike. The beauty is there is something for everyone. The best exercise is the kind you do! Read More

CRANS

MARTIN PEIKERT (1901-1975)

50 x 35½ in. Estimate: £4,000-6,000 ($5,275-8,000)

Skier or not, the appeal of vintage ski posters goes beyond the sport to have made them valuable artworks. Originally designed as magazine advertisements to lure skiers to the resorts of the Alps and Rockies as early as the 1920’s, these stylized vignettes emote that timeless feeling of a day on the slopes. Once fledgling ski resorts such as St. Moritz and Gstaad hired some of the most influential poster artists of the 20th century, and a selection of these nostalgic gems are to be auctioned at Christie’s London as part of their Interiors Sale on January 29. These are the graphic artists and posters that gave skiing its groove… Read More

Supreme x Sotheby’s

On January 25th, Sotheby’s auctioned the only privately owned collection of every Supreme skate deck ever manufactured in the sale “20 Years of Supreme.” Spanning 20 years of production, the archive included all 248 decks created by Supreme from 1998–2018, passionately collected over decades by owner Ryan Fuller. Offered as a single lot, the collection sold for $800,000, purchased by a young Chinese collector named Carson Guo.

This landmark archive interweaves streetwear, luxury, art and skate culture. Established in 1994, Supreme began as a skateboarding and fashion shop in downtown NYC that has grown into a global brand with a massive cult-like following. Supreme started producing their own skateboards in 1998 and have collaborated with the most coveted brands over the last 20 years – most famously with Louis Vuitton. The complete Louis Vuitton Boite skateboard trunk with tool kit, trucks, and wheels was also included in the lot.

Supreme is equally known for their skateboard collaborations with such prominent artists as George Condo, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, KAWS, Marilyn Minter, Nate Lowman, and Takashi Murakami, among others that are part of this collection.

CARSON GUO

Guo has not revealed too much about his plans for the collection, only to say they will go on view at a new creative shop and collaboration space he is opening in Vancouver in 2020. While this rare lot may be off the market now, many of these individual skateboard decks are also currently available at our partner site, GC/EDITIONS.
