E-Bike Safety Tips

 

 

After we posted An E-Bike for E-veryone last week, our good friend of STYLE of SPORT, actress and producer Alysia Reiner, reached out to ask if we were interested in a follow-up safety tips article. There has been much in the news recently about fires started by the Lithium-Ion batteries that power e-bikes when not stored or charged properly. It turns out Alysia has firsthand knowledge. She is a volunteer firefighter too!

It’s hard to miss this busy actress on the numerous television series in which she has both starring and guest roles. She plays DODC Agent Sadie Deever in the new Disney+/Marvel TV series, Ms. Marvel, and is well known for her character Natalie “FIG” Figueroa on all 7 seasons of Orange Is the New Black, for which she won a SAG Award. Alysia just finished her 5th season on the Peabody Award-winning Better Things on F/X x HULU, and also just wrapped 2 seasons on HBO’s The Deuce. She is about to start her second season on STARZ’s Shining Vale. So how did Alysia end up in the real-life role of firefighter too?

When the pandemic shut down the entertainment industry, Alysia retreated with her family to Fire Island, NY for what became a much-needed respite. “We felt so fortunate and safe there during Covid — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. After Covid I wanted to give back to this incredible community that I felt saved my life. So I became a volunteer firefighter.” Read More

Guilty Pleasures

 

 
If there’s one food many sports enthusiasts try to avoid, it’s likely junk food. According to a study done by Kent State University researchers, it’s not so much for the nutritional value, but more the guilt associated with eating these foods. In fact, the study shows that one’s knowledge of the unhealthiness of fast food is not enough to stop people from eating their favorite burgers, pizza, or fries. Rather, it’s the guilt about fast food consumption that urges one to stop eating their favorite meals. But what if junk foods can actually be beneficial for your sports performance?

Let’s be clear, junk foods are unhealthy when consumed on a regular basis. However, Lars Nybo of the University of Copenhagen shares that athletes and fitness enthusiasts might benefit from eating junk food, depending on their discipline. Nybo points out that athletes must combine the right diet with their training, which is why some athletes need to load up on carbs during the final 48 hours before an event, while sprinters or shot putters can get away with eating junk food for breakfast. Norway Spruce

 

 

The summer of 2019, I stumbled upon a Norwegian outdoor brand, Amundsen, at the Outdoor Retailer trade show. It was a small booth, packed with traditional hiking and outdoor apparel, with a playful and modern take. The first thing that caught my eye were little waxed cotton canvas Field Shorts — 3″ short shorts — with contrasting suede patches. Designed for the rigors of the mountains and trails, they could just as easily be worn on summer outings in town too.

Then I saw colorful lace-up, Boiled Wool Hoodies, a Nordic style known for its warmth, water and wind resistance that has long been used by seafaring and mountain adventurers. Joni Sternbach: Surfland

At The Art Show last month at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC, the work of Joni Sternbach was on view at the Von Lintel Gallery booth. A write up of the show in The New York Times featured a triptych her tintype photographs titled The Women and The Waves. As a fan of surf photography, I hustled over to see the work, and to my delight Sternbach was there as well.

Surfland is an on-going series of tintype portraits of surfers that represent a unique blending of subject matter and photographic technique. Working with a large-format camera, Sternbach has been photographing surfers around the world since 2006 using this antiquated process. Ironically, Sternbach had no intention of photographing surfers – nor does she surf – until they paddled into her frame one day. The project began as an ocean series. Waving them off, she never expected they would become the subject.

Popular in the mid-late 1800’s, a tintype is actually an underexposed negative created on a chemically coated, blackened metal plate in what is called the wet-plate collodion process. When the plate is exposed to light through the camera, an image develops with transparent areas appearing black because of the background. The overall darkness of the image gives the aura of a vintage photograph. Read More

Bowling for Dollars

 

 

Last week Project ALS hosted their 24th Annual Gala, Tomorrow is Tonight, at Bowlero at Chelsea Piers. Rather than a typical black-tie dinner, we went bowling! The evening honored Ben Stiller, his wife Christine Taylor, and their kids Ella and Quin, who like its founders, have made Project ALS a family affair.

Project ALS was founded by sisters Valerie, Meredith, and Jenifer Estess. In 1998, Jenifer, a 35-year-old New York theater and film producer, was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that destroys nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain which control voluntary muscle movement, eventually leading to paralysis and death.

Prior to Jenifer’s diagnosis, the sisters had been planning to start an entertainment company. They had always wanted to work together and had just put together a business plan when out of nowhere Jenifer was diagnosed with ALS. “Her symptoms presented as unimpressive at first”, Valerie told me, “general weakness, getting tired after walking a couple blocks, muscle twitches and stuff like that. She went to the doctor who said nothing was wrong. Go see a shrink.” Read More

Some people go to the mall to shop, others to eat, some go the movies, or to hang out with their friends. At the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey you can ski and snowboard too at Big Snow, North America’s only indoor, year-round, real-snow ski and snowboard facility.

About 20 minutes from Penn Station without traffic, Big Snow is situated across from Met Life stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, in the middle of the mall. Just get off the escalator and there it is, alongside other stores and attractions. They make fresh snow and groom the hill every day, where the slogan goes “Every day is a Snow Day”.

While running itself can be a meditative experience, when you combine it with a guided meditation it changes the experience. “Mindful running is the ability to run with a clear intention, fully connected in body and mind, free from distraction, and with an equal balance of focus and relaxation”, says Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of the popular meditation app Headspace.

At the core of meditation is the focus on staying present in the moment. The goal is to leave thoughts of the past behind and not get caught up in the future that has yet to happen. The breath is the tool that keeps you present by focusing on the rhythm of inhales and exhales — hard to ignore when running. Running can help you meditate and meditation can help you run. The two together can help make you better at both.

If you’re like most recreational runners, myself included, you run with music. Music gives you rhythm, energy, and motivation, but it’s also a distraction. It blocks out many sensations your body is feeling. There’s nothing wrong with that, but when you turn the music off, running becomes a different experience. You take in the sights and sounds. You become aware of your inhales and exhales. You hear the sound of your breath. The 2022 World Athletics Championships concluded last weekend with another thrilling gold medal performance by Team USA in the Womens 4 x 400m relay anchored by Sydney McLaughlin. It was a blazing follow-up performance for this running sensation who had broken her own world record once again on Friday night in the 400m hurdles with a dominating gold medal win. The Team USA women also took gold in the 4 x 100 relay on Saturday, shocking favored Jamaica with a upset win.

These were just a few of the highlights that made these World Championships so memorable — especially for this editor who had the opportunity to attend as a guest of Seiko, the Official Timekeeper, and run a lap on the same storied track as the world’s greatest runners.

For the first time in history the World Athletics Championships were hosted in the US at legendary Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Otherwise known as TrackTown USA, it was in Eugene that Nike was born, and where its co-founder, University of Oregon Track & Field head coach Bill Bowerman famously created the first waffle trainer that Nike would later produce, inspired by his wife’s waffle iron. “I’m originally from Malaysia and moved here for grad school. I just graduated with an MBA in finance. On view May 13 to September 4 at the New-York Historical Society is Title IX: Activism On and Off the Field, a new exhibition that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Title IX. This groundbreaking legislation that reshaped womens’ sports in America was an addition to the Education Amendments Act of 1972 that prohibited discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal assistance.

Title IX is Best known for its twin flashpoints of sports and sexual harassment. The exhibition traces its evolution through the work of those whose personal and professional experiences with sex discrimination in education and federal government agencies made them advocates for Title IX. There are personal items, photographs, and a re-creation of a campus kiosk advertising Take Back the Night demonstrations over the last 30 years, which in the 70’s became the first worldwide movement to combat sexual violence.

Salt + Snow is a new sport apparel e-commerce site curated and targeted to the ski, surf, and outdoor adventure loving woman. Co-founded by “Chief Adventurists” and friends, Kathy Thomas and Sara Zilkha, the site is designed to be an online marketplace and gathering spot for the female athlete — that beyond shopping is an insider’s guide to the travel, gear, food, and lifestyle that accompanies these sports.

Kathy and Sara met as fellow moms with kids at the same school in NYC. Picked to work on the school auction together, they were joined at the hip for a year, and so successful as a team that they went on to chair the event for 3 years. During that time Kathy invited Sara on a surf trip, a passion she had discovered in her 40’s. It imbued in Sara the same love of the sport. They kept their friendship and surf trips going, even after Sara moved to Aspen with her family.

It was on one of these surf trips that Salt + Snow was conceived. It began as a conversation about their shared obsession for adventure travel. For Kathy it was surf and ski, and for Sara it was other outdoor sports. Both were the types who would plan trips for their friends. Now on view at Michael Hoppen Gallery is the newest mountainscape by Sohei Nishino, Mountain Line, Mount Fuji, 2022. It is a follow up his 2019 work to Mountain Lines, Everest, created with his signature technique. Nishino combines photography, collage, and psychogeography to create large scale experiential prints of urban and natural landscapes, constructed with thousands of images.

Drawing inspiration from 18th century Japanese mapmaking, Nishino uses photographs as geographical representation, but with a subjective point of view. From a distance, his maps are almost abstract. It’s Saturday morning at Barry’s Bootcamp and class is packed for a newer workout called LIFT. There are no treadmills or running in this class. The entire 50 minutes is floorwork only, in the same circuit format Barry’s regulars know so well, but slower paced with heavier weights designed to work muscles to exhaustion. For people who don’t like to run, this class has become super popular, while those who don’t like to lift have found a fun and motivating environment to get that essential strength training done.

The benefits of strength training cannot be overstated, yet many of us, this editor included, choose cardio and HIIT classes, opting for what we assume is a better calorie or fat burning workout. The irony is muscle mass is more metabolically efficient, and research has shown our metabolic rate is boosted up to 72 hours after a strength-training workout. It can help decrease abdominal fat as well. (Healthline)

In addition, weight training supports all those cardio activities by building strength, improving mobility, and increasing range of motion to help prevent sidelining injuries. For women especially, as we age and become more susceptible to osteoporosis, strength training is essential to keep bones strong. Despite all this supporting information however, many women have stayed away from weight training for fear they would get too big and muscular — a myth the steroid filled heyday of bodybuilding helped propagate. A Special IRONMAN

 

STILLS FROM A SPECIAL OLYMPICS STORY: CHRIS NIKIC

On November 7, 2020, Chris Nikic crossed the finish line of the Ironman triathlon in Panama City Beach, Florida in 16:46:09 — 14 minutes under the 17-hour cutoff time. But in completing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run, Chris became the first man with Down syndrome to finish an Ironman triathlon. One year prior, he had been unable to do a single push-up.

The documentary A Special Olympics Story: Chris Nikic debuted last week for World Down Syndrome Day and tells the inspirational story of how this Special Olympics Champion Ambassador was able to accomplish this unfathomable feat with a simple mantra: get 1% better everyday.

Chris was introduced to Special Olympics through a golf skills program when he was 9 years old, and soon began participating in other sports like basketball, athletics, and swimming as well. Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, and provides training for more than 6 million athletes in more than 190 countries around the globe. The Chin Twins Off The Mat

 

 

Yoga Instagram stars Cristen and Kimberly Chin, otherwise known as the @ChinTwins, bring their practice off the mat and into our homes this week with the premiere of The Chin Twins on The Design Network. The six-episode series takes an inside look at the daily lives of these twin sisters, fashion models, wives, mothers, and family chefs who share recipes, beauty tips, and ways to entertain that incorporate the balance and serenity they seek as yogis.

The Chin Twins launched their Instagram in 2014, somewhat unplanned. While visiting in Alabama, where Kimberly and family make their home, the twins were practicing yoga together at the end of a pier when Cristen’s husband, acclaimed fashion photographer Nigel Barker, wandered down with his camera and started shooting the duo in action. He posted the pictures on his Instagram and the response was so overwhelming the Chin Twins decided to launch their own handle.
 


 
Barker has continued as their lensman and @ChinTwins has amassed nearly 100,000 followers. The images are very stylized, artistic, and not surprisingly, have a heavy fashion focus. “We’ve shown our audience one side of us, which has been primarily our yoga practice and how we use yoga in a physical way”, says Kimberly (Kimmy). “This show gave us the opportunity to take our audience into our homes and into our lives to show how you can infuse yoga into all parts of life, not just on the mat”. But before you start getting hammered after your workouts, we’re talking non-alcoholic beer here. Beer, as post workout beverage, has been marketed as of late to fitness enthusiasts — with craft brews like Sufferfest, whose tagline is “Will Sweat for Beer”, and Samuel Adams’ Boston 26.2 Brew, targeting athletes and weekend warriors. They are still alcoholic beverages, however, and not exactly healthy. Happy New Year and welcome to 31 Days of Fitness 2022! We are back with another action packed January of workouts, wellness, recovery, and more! Every day this month your intrepid editor will be checking out a different class, studio, app, modality, and trainer to showcase the amazing variety of workouts to get and stay in shape for the new year. Omicrom may be raging but we’re going to keep it safe with a mix of digital, studio, indoor, outdoor, and socially distant workouts. There’s no guessing where I might turn up!
 

DAY 1: POLAR BEAR PLUNGE

What a way to kick off the new year and 31 Days of Fitness 2022 than at the 119th Coney Island Polar Bear Club New Year’s Day Plunge, which returned this year after the 2021 Covid hiatus. Besides the symbolic cleansing of the past year, greeting the new year with a frigid but invigorating plunge has numerous health benefits as well. A cold water plunge increases blood flow, improves circulation, boosts the immune system, reduces inflammation, releases endorphins, and elevates your mood. In fact, I feel great! While most of us revelers are out there just one day year, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing club in the United States, founded in 1903, and members take the plunge every Sunday November-April!
