What the Heck is Colostrum?

Colostrum supplements are the latest hot dietary trend, with numerous brands and formulations flooding the marketplace in capsules, powders, and even coffee creamers. Pressed Juicery has a Cowboy Colostrum Bowl on the menu made in partnership with Cowboy Colostrum.

Colostrum is the concentrated, nutrient-dense “first milk” that is produced by the mammary glands after giving birth — essential for newborns, humans and animals alike. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, antibodies and antioxidants that help build a newborn’s immune system.

Bovine colostrum is now thought to have those same immune boosting health benefits for adults, and more: it can enhance performance and recovery; stimulate collagen production for better skin, stronger bones, and healthier hair; boost energy levels and improve mental clarity, among others.

According to Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Certified Nutritionist, Gut Health Specialist, and author of Get Off Your Sugar, what’s really fueling this trend is all of the benefits tied to gut health. Colostrum is “packed with natural immunoglobulins and growth factors that help seal the gut lining and calm inflammation, exactly where 70% of your immune system lives, while feeding your good bacteria. All of this equals less bloating, better digestion, and more energy. It’s becoming a secret weapon for people who’ve ‘tried everything’.” Read More

Fly Like A Bird

Austrian Red Bull athlete, Peter Salzmann, brought human flight a step closer to how birds fly, achieving a continuous soaring flight and gaining altitude, with the help of a revolutionary foil wing design. Above the volcanic cliffs of El Hierro in Spain’s Canary Islands, Salzmann used rising air currents along a mountain ridge to sustain a 160-second soaring run that included a 67-meter climb during his best ascent.

Wingsuit flying has traditionally been defined by continuous descent: pilots can glide forward, but gravity ensures they steadily lose altitude. To mimic birds, wingsuit pilots have had to use extremely strong winds of around 120 km/h. In El Hierro, however, Salzmann flew in much lower winds — around 40 km/h — gentle enough that paragliders could still fly alongside him. Read More

Frame of Fame: The Cannondale Flying V

THE CANNONDALE FLYINGV

In the ’90s, Cannondale’s DeltaV changed the mountain bike frame game. The new Cannondale FlyingV picks up where that disruption left off, carrying the silhouette forward in a lightweight, high-performance, all-carbon electric bike that blends racing heritage with urban mobility. It’s the first e-bike to feature full carbon construction, with a look that’s unmistakably modern and functional.

The FlyingV’s dropped V-frame is both futuristic and functional—easy to step over, strong, and visually striking. Designed for riders who value speed, style, and simplicity, it’s a sleek alternative to the bulky e-bikes dominating city streets. The lightweight all-carbon construction enhances maneuverability and makes it easy to carry too. Read More

Eternal Life

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to experience a performance and health assessment at Eternal, a facility targeted to athletes with the goal of continuing their sport and fitness pursuits in their post-prime years. I was put through a series of advanced tests — strength and power, mobility and stability, and aerobic health — performed on the kind of equipment you usually only see in professional athletic training facilities. In addition, there was a Dexa scan to analyze my body composition and bone density, and previously ordered bloodwork that was part of the total health and fitness assessment.

The results I received in every category included a 143+ biomarker panel that was so detailed and comprehensive, it gave me a complete picture of my current health and fitness baseline seven months post-back surgery — with physical and nutritional guidance for improvement going forward. I was truly blown away. Read More

The Protein Boost Buzz

Starbucks just announced a new line of protein-boosted lattes — part of the booming trend of countless foods, drinks, and snacks like popcorn, pizza, donuts, and even ice cream – now offering added protein in their products. But how much protein do we really need, and what should those protein sources be? Protein is the latest trend in nutrition, but is there any nutritional value in these products? Many are not that healthy to begin with, and adding protein makes them more alluring with the illusion that they are.

Protein is a vital macronutrient essential for building and preserving muscle mass. It provides the fundamental building blocks the body uses to grow new cells, repair damaged tissues, and maintain the health of all our muscle, skin, and bones. Protein supports immune function and provides the essential enzymes to catalyze metabolism and hormone production. But your optimal protein intake depends on your weight, age, and level of physical activity. Do you want to lose weight or build muscle mass?

You can calculate how much protein you need HERE, but for myself at 125 lbs. and active, the recommended amount is about 68g./day. Say I don’t eat that in a meal, I might want to grab a protein snack on the go. “But not all protein-boosted products are created equal”, says Jamie Lee McIntyre, Nutrition Communications Consultant at Jamie Lee RDN. “Some trendy drinks or snacks use added protein as an appealing front of pack label, but may also be loaded with added sugars, saturated fat, or other unnecessary additives.” Read More

Mount Everest: The World’s First Ski Descent

Andrzej Bargiel during the summit push on Mount Everest, Nepal

And that’s not all…

It’s one thing to summit Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen. It’s a whole other thing to then ski down it after summiting. On September 25th, 2025, Polish Ski Mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel made history when he did just that.

Bargiel’s quest began on September 19th, when he left Everest Base Camp to begin the acclimatization protocol, making several ascents and descents between the camps. This gradual rotation through Camps I, II, and III allowed him to adapt to the extreme altitude before establishing himself at Camp IV on the South Col (7,900 metres), ready for the final summit push. Agua Viva: One With The Sea

Summer 2025 we created this portfolio of watermen and waterwomen called Água Viva for Costa Brazil, a sustainable beauty line created by Francisco Costa, and built on the simple belief that the spirit of beauty is found in harmony with nature.

The editorial series celebrated those who live in rhythm with the ocean – surfers, voyagers, paddlers, and sailors — exploring their deep connection to the ocean, and the rituals that keep them grounded, both in and out of the water.

AUSTIN KINO & TAMIKO CLAIRE

~~~~~~~~~
Surfers, Paddlers, Vogagers
We begin with Austin Kino, 37, and Tamiko Claire, 36, from Oahu, Hawaii. Though they only truly connected later in life, they’ve long shared a bond through their relationship with the ocean. Austin and Tamiko met through modeling, but through their shared passion for the ocean pursuits of surfing and paddling, knew of each other from afar. This is what it means to be a waterman or waterwoman. It is what ties them together: salt, sea, and shared reverence for the waves. Read More
Ernie Barnes: From Pads to Palette
Photo: Steven Probert
Recently exhibited at the Independent Art Fair 2025 was a focused selection of works by Ernie Barnes, presented by Ortuzar gallery. Spanning five decades, the presentation highlighted the sports scenes that are at the heart of his oeuvre, ranging from football, baseball, to track and field.
Barnes began painting sports narratives in the late 1950s, drawing on his own background as a professional athlete in the American Football League (AFL) to depict the body in motion. In his autobiography, From Pads to Palette, Barnes recalls sketching in his playbook during team meetings, often raising the ire of his coaches for drawing instead of paying attention.
The Competitive Spirit, 2005; Hitting the Tape, 2005
It was when someone bought one of those sketches that Barnes realized being an artist was a better career choice. Reflecting on his firsthand experience, Barnes sought “to tell a real truth of what it feels like to get hit, to hit, to run, to turn, to backpedal.” In the mid-1960s, Barnes retired from professional sports and turned fully to painting. During this period, he exhibited new work and became the official artist of the AFL. Read More
Fueling Champions: The Energy Equation
“We need energy for everything — heart, lungs, kidneys, reproductive health, digestion, immune function, bone health, and mental health. If you don’t eat enough, the energy you do have goes to your sport first, and there may not be enough left to support those other systems. That’s where health problems start to appear.” -Heidi Skolnik
Heidi Skolnik, MS, CDN, FACSM, recently joined the sports nutrition team of the New York Liberty — the WNBA champions of the 2024 season. It’s a well-earned appointment for one of the most respected leaders in the field of performance nutrition.
Skolnik’s resume spans some of the biggest teams in professional sports — the New York Knicks, New York Giants, and New York Mets among them — as well as the NHL, MLS, and WNBA. Through her company, Nutrition Conditioning, she also oversees the Performance Nutrition Program at The Juilliard School and the School of American Ballet, and has consulted for numerous Broadway productions.
For this editor, though, her latest position is especially exciting as the 2025 WNBA playoff season kicks off, given the overwhelming popularity of women’s basketball and the Liberty’s last history-making season. I’ve known Heidi for more than 30 years, and sat down with her to talk about her new role, the culture of the Liberty, and why fueling the body is about so much more than performance. Read More
Back Dive, 1954, 14 x 11 inch silver gelatin print
Now on view at Danziger Gallery through September 6th is “Sport”, a selection of sports images by Harold Eugene Edgerton, the photographer who is credited with inventing the strobe flash. Edgerton or “Doc” as he was affectionately known, developed an electronic technology which allowed for high-speed photography and captured moments previously unseen by the human eye.
With his new flash Edgerton was able to photographically freeze the action of such things as drops of milk falling into a saucer,  bullets going through everyday objects, and the wing motion of various birds. But he was particularly drawn to capturing the action of sports and sports greats – Bobby Jones’ golf swing; tennis champion Gussie Moran’s serve; Wes Fessler (one of the Buckeyes’ greatest football players) kicking a football. HOTWORX: The Infrared Sauna Workout
TOP RIGHT, HOTWORX FOUNDER STEPHEN SMITH
Stephen Smith first began selling gym memberships as an 18-year-old in Mississippi. What started as a career in gym franchising — eventually owning three Gold’s Gyms — evolved into something unexpected. In the mid-1990s, Stephen teamed up with business partner Nancy Price to launch Planet Beach, one of the first tanning salon franchises in the US, which would spawn the creation of the fitness franchise, HOTWORX.
When Planet Beach began, no one was franchising tanning salons and the duo built a booming business. But when the 2008 financial crash hit, followed by the 2010 imposition of a 10% federal tanning tax under the Affordable Care Act, the tanning industry imploded almost overnight. They needed to pivot fast.
In August 2014, on vacation with Nancy and her husband Jerome, an exercise physiologist and former competitive bodybuilder like Stephen, a conversation sparked a game-changing idea. Jerome had been practicing Bikram yoga – discovering the benefits of this hot workout, but found it was too time consuming at 90 minutes. Stephen had recently added infrared saunas to some Planet Beach locations. What if, Jerome wondered aloud, you could practice yoga inside the infrared sauna? Read More
Jumping rope is long known to be one of the most efficient workouts with a myriad of health and fitness benefits. It provides a full body workout by engaging multiple muscle groups, improving cardiovascular conditioning while enhancing coordination and agility. In addition, a jump rope is the most inexpensive, space-saving, portable piece of fitness equipment money can buy.
One of the most effective calorie-torching activities, studies have shown that just 10 minutes of jumping rope offers the same cardiovascular benefits as a 30-minute run. A high-intensity aerobic exercise, jumping rope has the “afterburn effect”, also known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), that keeps your body burning calories even after the workout is done.
The right equipment and proper technique are essential to keep jumping long enough to gain these fitness benefits. We turned to one of the most renowned boxing trainers, Micheal Olajide Jr., for some basic tips on both. Read More
Behind The Lens: CADDIS Founder Tim Parr
TIM PARR
Photos by Jake Chessum
It used to be as we got older and started to need reading glasses, the only option were those “granny” glasses sold in the drugstore, demi-frames that sat on the edge of your nose. They were called granny glasses for a reason. Wearing readers made you look old. All that changed when CADDIS came along, reinventing the category, making readers — and getting older — look cool.
The opening paragraph on their about page reads: “CADDIS is calling bullshit on 50 is the new 40, on the whole fountain of youth illusion, on the many industries that are profiting on vanity and fear of age, on the concept of ‘aging gracefully’ and on the notion of raging against the dying of the light.” But that was not the original idea for the brand. It was to reinvent the category, because “the product sucked”, said Tim Parr, the founder of CADDIS, in a recent conversation with STYLE of SPORT.
I met Tim Parr by chance in the CADDIS shop in the West Village of Manhattan a couple of weeks ago. I was there picking out glasses for a photo shoot. He asked if I needed help, that he “kind of worked there.” We started chatting and I asked him what he actually did in the store. He smiled and told me he’d started the company. As the universe had presented this opportunity, I asked if I could interview him for STYLE of SPORT. Five days later we were chatting over coffee about the evolution of CADDIS, how it all started, and what’s to come. Read More
Below Deck
From top: Sperm whale, Domenica; Mother and baby sperm whale below in Dominica; Their whales tails
“When the guide spots the whales you are dropped in their path no less than three hundred feet away. They will often swim with in ten feet of you if they do not feel threatened.”
I’ve known Brad Roaman since we were kids in high school, growing up in New York City. He has always been an avid sailor, sharing his love of the water on his boat with his friends, myself included, from above the surface. When he recently showed me these images of whales he had photographed below the surface, I was mesmerized. Brad is a fashion photographer, and I was familiar with that body of work, but for me this was a whole different level in a whole new environment.
Brad began shooting what he callsWaterscapes” about a year ago. It began with him photographing his son and friends jumping off the boat from the water. He was shooting on his phone, trying to stay afloat with one hand, and taking pictures with the other. His perspective was just below the surface, water filling different parts of the frame from below. “The beauty of the water”, he told me, “is you never know what you’re going to get, how the water is going to frame the foreground and people in the background”. A Rooftop Ocean Skatepark
Perched between the mountains and the sea on the coast of China is the city of Qingdao, the location of a new skatepark with a design like no other. As the flow of skateboarding mirrors the essence of surfing, the skatepark recreates an ocean on the rooftop of Qingdao MixC mall. The layout incorporates flowing curves of ocean waves, highlighting the connection between the two sports.
Qingdao’s breathtaking coastal scenery is considered a natural treasure, yet it is also a commercial city. Qingdao Mixc Phase I and II Connection Area Skatepark Renovation Project, designed by Within Beyond Studio, allows the two to coexist in harmony. This dual activation, both in terms of spatial design and movement, infuses the entire terrace. Read More
The Air in There
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has long been used to aid in the recovery of serious medical conditions. Originally developed to treat decompression sickness in divers, HBOT has since gained recognition for its wide-ranging medical and overall health benefits. From accelerating wound healing to enhancing cognitive function, this therapy has become a powerful tool in modern medicine and as a popular wellness treatment.
In a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, atmospheric pressure is increased two to three times normal levels, allowing the body to absorb significantly higher amounts of oxygen. HBOT is often prescribed after surgery because the increased pressure pumps more oxygen into the bloodstream, and this heightened oxygenation promotes cellular repair, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the production of stem cells, which play a crucial role in tissue regeneration. The increased oxygen supply also enhances circulation and helps combat infection by boosting the immune system.
The increased oxygenation that accelerates the natural healing process has numerous overall health benefits as well, and there are Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers at wellness and medical centers all over the country. These benefits can include increased energy, improved cognitive clarity, better sleep, and over wellbeing. The anti-inflammatory effects of HBOT have been shown to help improve athletic performance and reduce recovery time. The extra oxygen in the bloodstream can also improve aerobic capacity and endurance.
It’s NFL playoff season and plenty of football to watch in the countdown to the Superbowl. Game time is snack time. No need to sabotage your diet with all the healthy chips and dips available at most grocery and convenience stores.
Robin Barrie Kaiden MS, RD, CDN, CSSD, one of the nation’s leading experts in personal wellness and nutrition, recommends crunchy snacks like organic popcorn, chips, and nuts cooked in olive or avocado oil. Avoid refined vegetable oils like corn oil, sunflower oil, and safflower oil.
Says Kaiden, “I love Kettle Brand Chips made with avocado oil. For tortilla-style chips, my favorite are Siete. They are grain free made only with cassava flour, avocado oil, coconut flour, chia seeds and salt.” Read More
Why Everyone Is Cheering for Non-Alcoholic Beer
The popularity of non- alcoholic beer has surged with the fantastic variety now on the market. Almost every major brewery makes one. Athletic Brewing offers a beer for every taste profile and more than a dozen flavors. Refreshing and delicious, these brews are perfect on game day, and as replenishing recovery fuel too.
Traditionally non-alcoholic beers have paled in flavor, compared to their alcoholic counterparts. Stripping the alcohol removes that beer flavor, and adding malt is what brings it back — along with all sorts of additional health benefits. Says Peeyush Maheshwari, PhD, the Founder and Principal of Food 4 Thought, “Minus the alcohol, beer is actually a nutritious beverage, and this is where malt extract makes its mark.”
The high antioxidant content in malt extract, in addition to the substantial amounts of polyphenols — plant compounds with anti-inflammatory properties — make non-alcoholic beer an ideal beverage for athletic recovery. Notably, it has become the beverage of choice for many Olympic athletes in Germany, after a 2012 study revealed that runners who drank non-alcoholic beer before and after the Munich Marathon reported less inflammation post-race than runners who drank a placebo.
