Great Performances: The SOS Champions of 2020

SARAH FULLER

While professional sports may have come to a crashing halt for much of this year with seasons cut short in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, there were still so many epic sport achievements in 2020. Women showed the boys how to play like a girl, opposing players rallied together against social injustice, and every athlete demonstrated what sports are really all about… the triumph of the human spirit against all odds. These are our picks for the top 10 sport performances of the year, and our 2020 STYLE of SPORT Champions!

Sarah Fuller plays like a girl…

#LetsMakeHistory… she said and she did! On December 12th, Sarah Fuller became the first woman to score in an NCAA Football Power Five conference game — which includes the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and ACC — with a kick in the 4th quarter delivered squarely through the uprights. With the remainder of the season canceled due to Covid-19, it was not before her history making achievement. Read More

Have Your Carbs & Eat Them Too!

Fat free, low carb, high protein… every few years a new diet trend comes along, eliminating one major food group while promoting another, touting the miracle health and weight loss results. What goes around comes around, and the cyclical nature of what to eat and what not to eat can get very confusing. The diet and nutritional trends we feature on STYLE of SPORT are a trickle-down from elite athletes and what they eat for sport performance. Carbohydrates used to be considered the go-to fuel source, but in recent years that has shifted to fat, which as it turns out is great for weight loss too. But the latest trend lets you have it all!

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred fuel source, generally because that’s what we feed it. The body converts carbs into glucose for fuel. What it doesn’t use, it stores as glycogen. But there is a limited capacity to how much glycogen it can store, 2400 calories in fact, and after that the excess glucose is stored as fat. Carbs are easier to access for fuel than fat, and what the body will turn to first for energy. “Carbo loading” used be the norm for endurance athletes, with bowls of pasta consumed the night before a long race, and sugary gels during the race.

When carbohydrates are not available however, the body will tap into other fuel sources, namely fat. If you think of your metabolism like a fire, carbs are the kindling. But kindling burns fast, as opposed to those slow burning logs underneath which you can compare to fat. As such, many endurance athletes have discovered that fat is actually a better source of energy, and trained their bodies to be fat burners instead of sugar burners. The low-carb, high-fat Keto diet is a popular reflection of that trend. Gone are the bowls of pasta before a race, replaced the body’s own supply of fat, something many of us have handily stored in places we don’t want it.  Read More

Wheee-Bike!

ZIPPING AROUND ON THE EEYO EBIKE

The Gogoro Eeyo is an electric bike, or “eBike”, a mode of transportation that has become increasingly popular — even more so since the Coronavirus pandemic — as an environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and health conscious way to get around. We’ve been writing about eBikes for a while now, since their evolution from junkyard delivery bike with a big battery, to a refined breed of modern commuter bikes. Almost all the major bike companies, along with a host of other bespoke brands, now manufacture an eBike.

The eBikes we are talking about are not like a moped or motorcycle. They do not have a throttle. You have to pedal for your power, and on some bikes harder than others. Class 1 eBikes max out at 20 mph,and Class 3 at 28 mph. Class 2 models are different in that they have throttles and don’t require pedaling. That’s typically what you see the delivery guys riding and not really an eBike. When buying an eBike you want to be sure it has the power, range, and comfort you need for your ride. How long is your commute? Are there a lot of hills? Do you like to ride fast?

The advantage of these “pedal-assist” eBikes, even for the most fit and active rider, is an extra boost of power that is there when you need it… on a long commute, if you’re in a rush, or you’d prefer not to arrive sweaty at your destination. Plus, they’re a heck of a lot of fun! And for you bike geeks and design obsessed, a few of the latest models are so sleek and chic, with the battery and motor integrated into the frame, you’d hardly even know they were eBikes! Check out these 3 new models that are sure to appeal. Read More

CBD 101: The Athlete’s Guide

MUSCLE MX, BROOKLYN HEMPOLOGY, ELEMENTS BY DR. RICHARD FIRSHEIN, PLANT ALCHEMY, KOI CBD

Walk into any health food or drugstore these days and you’ll see shelves filled with CBD products. In particular, there are a multitude of CBD creams and balms targeting muscle pain and inflammation, the common symptoms of overuse or injury any athlete encounters. CBD stands for cannabidiol and is the relaxing but non-psychotropic component of the cannabis sativa (marijuana) plant. Its counterpart is THC, the component that gets you high. CBD and THC are the most well known components, but there are many more cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, all of which have different therapeutic benefits.

There are three different categories of CBD products: CBD isolate, which contains no other cannabinoids or THC; broad-spectrum CBD, which contains most cannabinoids; and full-spectrum CBD, which in addition to the full range of cannabinoids also contains THC, up to the maximum 0.3 percent allowed by law. With such a miniscule amount, there are generally none of the mind-altering effects associated with THC.

While CBD isolates and broad-spectrum are ideal for consumers who want to be sure there is no THC in their product, without the other cannabinoids, the overall therapeutic benefits of CBD are reduced. Without the THC, what is known as the “entourage effect” is reduced as well. Even with just the trace amount allowed, CBD is more effective with THC. With so many options to choose from, including all the different dosages available, how do you know which one to buy? We asked Dr. Richard Firshein of the Firshein Medical Center for some answers. Lift Off

It’s surfing without a wave, snowboarding without the powder, flying without a plane… it’s eFoiling, your new (albeit expensive) board sport! An eFoil is a motorized surfboard with a sleek hydrofoil design that lifts the board out of the water at speeds of up to 25 mph with the control of a wireless handheld remote. Lift, the family-owned, Puerto Rico based company, is the creator of the best-selling eFoil on the market — and one can be yours for a mere $12,000.

You are likely familiar with the concept of foiling as it applies to sailing, and have seen the hydrofoil race boats that have become standard design in the America’s Cup. As speed increases, wing-like foils propel the board up and you float above the surface as the blade slices through the water below. A two-hour charge lets you ride for about 90 minutes.

Described by some as a cross between a Jet Ski and a surfboard, thankfully the electric motor is silent, and eFoiling takes some athletic skill to master. I’ve been wanting to demo an e-Foil for a while, and Lift hooked me up with a lesson in Montauk, L.I. earlier this week. Kai Costanzo, owner of KaiKai sandals located at Gossman’s Dock (and other locations) was my instructor. Telling me most people don’t stand up on their first lesson, such would be my motivation!

Francisco Costa Is Costa Brazil

When Francisco Costa left Calvin Klein in 2016, after 13 years as the Creative Director, it would not be another fashion house he would seek. This native of Brazil returned to his homeland and found himself deep within the rainforest of the Amazon — not on the luxury cruise he had originally planned with friends — but with an indigenous tribe called the Ywanawas. It was here by chance that his newest venture was born, Costa Brazil.

Costa Brazil is an all-natural skin care line — a blend of powerful ingredients, sourced from the Brazilian rainforest — that Costa discovered on that first trip and multiple visits since. At the core of the line are body oils that blend mineral-rich Kaya, antioxidant-packed Cacay, and the aromatic healing properties of Breu. While Costa Brazil bears Francisco’s name, it is Brazil that is at the heart of the brand, embodying the connection between beauty and nature that distinguishes the place from which he comes.

The products are an olfactory delight, the essence of which is a resin called Breu, revered for its sacred aromatherapy benefits. It was the first ingredient Costa discovered on his maiden trip to the Amazon, and became the inspiration for the line. The aroma is hard to describe. It is exotic, like a place you’ve never been but want to go… a jungle, forest, or other some natural wonderland where the scent is so fragrant it’s almost intoxicating, and makes you want to return again and again. W.O.W! Surfing With Cynthia Rowley

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANNE MENKE

Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley loves to surf. She is admittedly obsessed, as most hard core surfers are. It’s a shared family passion with husband Bill, and their two daughters Kit, 20, and Gigi, 14 — spending summer and fall weekends surfing in Montauk, and vacations in such far-flung surf locales as Costa Rica, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Senegal.

Cynthia’s style on the waves is cool and graceful, with an easy flow befitting the fashion design for which she is known. She started surfing about 20 years ago, trading a big house in East Hampton for a little shack on the beach in Montauk. A friend and local surfer told her she couldn’t live in that house if she didn’t surf. He paddled her out the next day and she popped right up on the first wave. She was hooked.

I joined Cynthia and daughter Kit for a surf session last weekend in Montauk for our latest installment of W.O.W! Working Out With, having as much fun on the mushy waves of a rainy Saturday, as the perfect ones of a sunny Sunday. Kit is following in her mother’s – and father’s – footsteps with her own fashion line. The three of us chatted about their shared love of surfing and fashion — and what’s coming down the pipeline for both… Read More

Heal Thyself

For many fitness lovers and weekend warriors, overuse injuries often come with the territory. Luckily there are chiropractors, acupuncturists, and massage therapists to get us back in action as fast as possible. When the coronavirus pandemic hit however, those practitioners’ offices closed, and with that went the treatments and therapies on which we’ve come to rely.

Though many sport and physical therapists’ offices are now open, with Covid fears and the pandemic lingering, some people are still reluctant to go, despite the safety precautions doctors and health practitioners have taken. While we can’t replace the hands-on techniques of a great physical therapist, there are a number of things we can do ourselves to keep those nagging injuries from becoming more serious.

One of my primary sport therapists is Dr. Peter Duggan of Fuel Spine & Sport in Manhattan, where in addition to skeletal adjustments, they use active release therapy, along with a variety of other muscular therapies and modalities to treat both recreational and professional athletes. He and I spoke about what recovery therapies we can do on our own when getting into the doctor’s office is not an option or as convenient as it once was. Read More

Lateral Objects

We featured production designer Stefan Beckman’s home furnishings line, Lateral Objects, when it launched last summer with a collection of bright and graphic beach towels. The collection has since expanded into tableware with placemats, napkins, and glasses, along with additional beach products like camp chairs and tote bags — as well as a shop in the Long Island hamlet of Bellport, NY that carries the whole line and more.

Beckman is arguably fashion’s most sought after production designer, creating the sets and stages for such designers as Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and Bottega Veneta – in addition to his editorial work for such publications as Vogue Italia, W, Love, and Interview. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, and so much of the fashion industry on lockdown, like many New Yorkers he left the city for his summer home, and set up shop — literally — in Bellport. Mason’s Tennis has been a part of the New York City shopping landscape since 1975 — a go-to destination for NYC’s tennis set and tourists alike. Opened by founder Mark Mason during tennis’s heyday, when players like Chris Evert, Bjorn Borg, Guillermo Vilas, John McEnroe, and Vitas Gerulaitas ruled the courts — and brands like Fila, Tacchini, and Ellesse made tennis style as big a part of the game as the matches themselves.

Weight for It

No weights? No problem! With gyms still closed and everyone working out at home, weights are almost impossible to find — or marked up on eBay at black market prices. But don’t let that get in the way of your workout! Everyday objects will do just fine.

I’ve been using gallon jugs of Poland Spring myself for dumbbells, which weigh 8.34 lbs. 2 cups of water weighs about 1 lb., so whether you’re curling a liter bottle (2.2 lbs) or bench pressing a 5 gallon water cooler refill jug (41.7 lbs), you really can substitute any water container for a weight (Water/Weight Calculator). Wine or champagne bottles are another option, slightly heavier because they are glass and not plastic, which on average weigh between 2-3 lbs.

Wood is another idea. A 2 x 4″ can be cut to measure at Home Depot or Lowe’s, and weighs about 1.2 lbs. per foot. Stack two pieces together to easily double that weight. Or use a brick for a 5 lb. weight. Other ideas at the hardware store are paint cans — gallon size or smaller sample cans which are more easily hand held. Paint weighs more than water, and varies depending on type between 10-15 lbs. per gallon, but you can also purchase empty paint cans at places like Walmart and simply fill with water.

Sandbags are another idea which can be found at a variety of different types of stores. Saddle bag styles from a camera or lighting supply shop can be purchased in different weights from 5-50 lbs. and have convenient handles too! Other options are food — from a can of soup which weighs about .75 lbs, to potatoes which come pre-measured in 5 lb. bags.

All these ideas are in stock and available online or in stores now. So no weights? No excuses!

As Pro Sports Return, Some Stars Say Not So Fast

United States Women’s National Team star Megan Rapinoe will be noticeably absent from the N.W.S.L. Challenge Cup when the National Women’s Soccer League resumes play later this month. Rapinoe is refusing to play on the grounds of safety, and her team, OL Reign, will be without her for the month-long tournament taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The 34-year-old soccer star is one of the biggest names in the game, having led the USWNT to victory in the 2019 Women’s World Cup. “I understand her motivations,” her coach Farid Benstiti was quoted as saying in the The New York Times, “but I am disappointed and frustrated that she will not be with us to compete in this tournament. Megan is important to the group, and we could have achieved something big if she had joined the rest of the group. She will be missed by the team and also by women’s football.”

Rapinoe isn’t the only member of the USWNT who is refusing to play, according to Yahoo Sports, but she is the only one who has been named so far. Players have voiced concerns about safety and testing protocols, isolation from their families during the required quarantine, and the risk of injury in a compressed schedule where most games will be played on artificial turf — the latter of which has been an ongoing concern for players even before the Coronavirus pandemic hit. Rapinoe tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee while training on a turf field before one of the national team’s victory tour games, and also tore the meniscus in her left knee in 2017.

Drew Brees Fumbles… Again

In October of 2018, New Orleans Saints fans cheered as their beloved quarterback Drew Brees broke Peyton Manning’s record to become the all-time leading passer in NFL history – and on a touchdown pass no less. We celebrated this accomplishment but with a more scathing view in Go Rylan Brees.

The headlines read, “Drew Brees Gives Inspiring Talk To His Kids After New NFL Record”. Except he didn’t give an inspiring talk to his kids. He gave it to his three sons as his daughter watched, held in the arms of her mother. “Hey boys, hey boys!” Brees exclaimed. “You can accomplish anything in life that you want to work for, right?” (watch here)

I was stunned when I first saw it, unable to believe how rampant sexism still was in this sensitive climate – not just in sports, but the media too. I couldn’t believe no one picked up on it or told that story. But thankfully Drew Brees’ fumble on Wednesday did not go unnoticed, when a statement he made in an interview with Yahoo Finance went viral and became headline news. Read More

Finding Calm

Photographs by Coliena Rentmeester

Back in October we did a feature with our contributing nutrition editor Sarah Wragge on energy and how to get more of it. With the crazy busy lives we were living then — going from home life, to the gym, to work, and out at night — energy seemed a priority. While we are certainly still living crazy lives, ones that have been upended by the Coronavirus pandemic, our priorities have shifted. What we really need now are strategies to stay calm and relax. Not easy to do!

We are all super stressed out by the direct and indirect effects of this virus in ways we might not even be consciously aware. All we hear is bad news 24-7 and there seems to be no end in sight. Our baseline emotional state is one of high anxiety, which is very taxing on the immune system as well. With all this in mind we conferred with Sarah again on some tactics to chill out and relax in these unprecedented times…

EXERCISE

STYLE OF SPORT: Exercise is a great emotional outlet and while most of us are trying to stay fit at home while gyms are closed, it’s not like we’re getting the same benefits from our workouts. I’m doing the best I can, but my workouts just aren’t as intense on my own.

SARAH WRAGGE: With screaming kids in the background, technology glitches with Zoom workouts, and other distractions at home, you’re not getting that exercise high you normally would with the energy and support of a classroom and teacher pushing you. Our usual stress outlets have been taken away, so our exercise needs to be more harmonious and calming. Maybe your workout style shifts. It might be different now than it was before. I find I’m doing more yoga because it’s relaxing, Yin and Restorative yoga in particular, as opposed to a HIIT workout which revs me up. Figure out what type of movement is going to benefit you not just physically but emotionally — after the workout as well. Read More

Fire and Iceland

Skogafoss Waterfall

When it came time for busy actress Alysia Reiner — star of such hit shows as Orange Is the New Black, Better Things, and The Deuce — to plan a family vacation last December, it was not one that included much rest. While many people choose a warm beach or tropical climate over the holidays, Alysia and her husband, fellow actor David Alan Basche, along with 11-year old daughter Livia, packed up for frigid but beautiful Iceland — in fact, it was her daughter’s idea!

Livia has always loved volcanoes. “Since she was tiny, she was slightly obsessed”, Alysia told Style of Sport. I suggested Costa Rica, but she came up with Iceland”. Perhaps volcanoes are not what first come to mind when you think of Iceland — it’s more glaciers and the famous Blue Lagoon — but actually Iceland has some the most geothermal activity in the world. There are approximately 130 volcanoes, both active and inactive. Many of them are underneath the surface of the earth and underwater, which is how those incredible hot springs were formed.

Skaftafell 5 hour Glacier Hike with Iceland Rovers Tour Company

Known as the “Land of Ice and Fire”, Iceland is a natural wonderland where the freezing forces of arctic weather are in constant battle with the explosive heat of the earth. The result is a dramatic landscape of stark contrasts — fields of moss-coated lava, plains of black sand, explosive geysers, mountainous glaciers, and of course, those blue thermal hot springs. All of which make for a very adventurous vacation. Read More

The series focuses on Jordan — his rise as a college player and evolution into NBA superstar — along with behind-the-scene stories of Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, coach Phil Jackson, and other notable personalities that reveal the conflicts that ultimately led to the dynasty’s demise. Kassia Meador: Sound Surfer

PHOTOGRAPHS BY SARAH LEE

Back in early October, I attended a press event for Kassia + Surf in NYC. The company and its namesake founder were introducing a new line of wetsuits made from recycled neoprene and salvaged tires, along with a collection of other eco-conscious surf apparel. Considered perhaps the best female longboarder ever, Kassia Meador’s graceful and effortless surfing style is legendary — cross stepping and tiptoeing up to the nose of the board, hanging out there in a crouch, or maybe topping it off with a twirl.

The press event was hosted at Mndfl, one of the new breed of meditation studios that have popped up over the last few years, and a featured part of the morning would be a sound bath meditation led by Kassia herself. If you have never experienced a sound bath, it is style of meditation that uses vibrational sound waves produced by chimes, gongs, drums, and crystal bowls as a relaxation technique. As you “bathe” in these tones, it facilitates a shift in your brainwaves to a state of deep relaxation and rest. For those who are new to meditation or have found it a challenge, a sound bath is a great place to start. Focusing on these vibrational tones can help tune out distractions to attain that deeply meditative state many of us find so elusive. Read More

Hooping It Up

SABRINA IONESCU

Last weekend was a big one in professional basketball. Though there were no live games, both the NBA and WNBA featured major stories. In the WNBA draft, “virtual” this year, the number one pick went to the New York Liberty who selected Sabrina Ionescu. Over on ESPN, The Last Dance, the much-anticipated documentary series on Michael Jordan and the 1990’s Chicago Bulls debuted.

Basketball fan or not, undoubtably the name Michael Jordan is familiar to you, but likely not that of Sabrina Ionescu. Here’s why it should and likely will be soon.

Star point guard at the University of Oregon, Sabrina Ionescu is the first player in NCAA Division I history – male or female – to record 2,000 career points, 1,000 career assists, and 1,000 career rebounds. She also finished her college career with a record 26 triple-doubles (that’s points, assists, and rebounds). Even more impressive is that she achieved this milestone just hours after delivering an unforgettable eulogy at Kobe Bryant’s memorial service in front of tens of thousands at the Staples Center (watch here).

3 Simple Immune Boosting Tips!

Arthur Belebeau/Trunk Archive

One of people’s primary questions during this Coronavirus pandemic is, “What can I do to boost my immune system?” Wondering that ourselves, we turned to our resident health and nutrition expert, Sarah Wragge, for some answers. It turns out there are a number of simple things we can be doing right now in the comfort of home — and the first place to start is with our gut.

You hear the term “gut health” all the time. Over 75% of our immune system lives in our gastrointestinal tract. Lined with about 100 trillion live microorganisms – this complex ecosystem of both beneficial and harmful bacteria promotes healthy digestion, protects the body from infection, and regulates the immune system.

“If our gut microbiome is balanced and functioning well, then our immune system is ready for action”, says Sarah. “Make your gut the priority right now.” Here are 3 simple ways: Read More

There are a plethora of digital workouts available to stream — more than ever before with gyms closed and everyone working out at home. If the choices feel overwhelming, here is our basic old-school workout anyone can do  — and it’s free!

The SOS Circuit Workout was designed by Ngo Okafor, the owner and founder of Iconoclast Fitness in NYC, who has transformed the physiques of such celebrities as Brooke Shields, Iman, Mariska Hargitay, and Kate Walsh, among others. He’s also the ripped guy in these pictures.

The workout is easy to follow with tried and true moves that hit every body part. The starting position is in the inset photo. Do 15 reps of each exercise and go for 3 rounds — or just do 1 round for an express total body workout! In between each round we’ve got cardio intervals from which to choose. Hand weights are required, but other appropriately weighted objects can be substituted like wine bottles, water jugs, or elastics. Get creative! Read More

Sweetened with Monk Fruit

Move over stevia… there’s a new all-natural, calorie-free sweetener in town! Monk fruit, or lo han guo, is a small gourd-like melon native to parts of China and Thailand, named after the monks who first cultivated it centuries ago. The health benefits of the fruit have been well-known in Traditional Chinese Medicine for decades, but its sweet little secret is finally making it into the wellness mainstream.

Monk fruit sweetener is derived from the extract of the dried fruit, and processed into crystal form. It is 150-250 times sweeter than table sugar, due primarily to naturally occurring antioxidants known as mogrosides, which give it a cleaner and more intense sweetness, with no bitter aftertaste. Monk fruit has zero calories and carbs, and does not raise blood glucose levels — making it a good choice for diabetics and popular with the Keto community.

Sweeten your coffee, sprinkle on oatmeal, or mix into cocktails (Swoon simple syrup), monk fruit is stable at cold or hot temperatures, and can be used in baked goods too. Just be sure the monk fruit sweetener you buy has no other sugar additives, as some do.

With no known side effects, and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration, Monk Fruit is the new sweetener of choice for the weight-watching, health-conscious, and wellness set.

With gyms and boutique fitness studios closed, digital and streaming workouts are replacing our regular bootcamp, yoga, cycling, barre, and Pilates classes. More on that to come in follow-up post tomorrow, but in the meantime check out 31 Days of Digital Fitness!

Healthy eating in these days has new challenges as well. While some store shelves are cleared of dry goods and non-perishables — for those of us who regularly choose fresh foods, keeping things like meat, fish, fruits and vegetables in our diet now requires a bit more planning.

I asked our friend Erin Parekh, Holistic Health Coach and Culinary Nutrition Expert, for some easy-to-make dishes to prepare now and freeze for later. If you’re craving some comfort food in these stressful days that’s healthy too, here are six recipes for both meat and plant-based eaters (marked PB), Erin shared with me that I’m passing on to you!  Read More

In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, many major sporting events and entire seasons have been cancelled or suspended: March Madness (NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament); the NHL, NBA, MLB and NASCAR seasons; Indian Wells (BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament); and the Players Championship and Masters Tournament. For fans who weren’t planning on attending these events, this means no televised sports either.

So while you’re hunkered down at home with nothing to watch this weekend, we thought we’d offer some alternatives. Many of the greatest movies of all time have been sport themed, and we’ve got 12 of the all-time favorite baseball, hockey, basketball, tennis, golf, and race car movies to keep you entertained! Mountain Lines, Everest

MOUNTAIN LINES, EVEREST, 2019

Now on view at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London is Sohei Nishino|New Works featuring a monumental new work by the artist, Mountain Lines, Everest. Drawing inspiration from 18th century Japanese mapmaking, Nishino combines photography, collage, and psychogeography to create large scale experiential prints of urban and natural landscapes. Fascinated by the geographical and historical magnitude of Everest, Nishino took on one of the world’s most challenging environments to create his latest piece.

Nishino uses photographs as geographical representation, but it is with a subjective point of view. His signature photo-collage technique pieces together thousands of images taken over the course of his travels, to construct dioramas of complex geographies which integrate human and physical landscapes. From a distance, Nishino’s maps are almost abstract. It is not until we examine them in detail that the full experience unfolds.  Read More

Fuel Up: Our 8 Fave Nutrition Bars!

One of the topics about which I get asked all the time are bars — not where to have a drink with friends — but snack, protein, and nutrition bars. Walk into any health food, grocery, or even drugstore, and you see aisles filled with them. But how do you know which ones are actually good for you, which are filled with additives, or which are candy bars in healthy packaging?

I am a snacker. I prefer to eat smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to bigger breakfasts and lunches. A nutrition bar is usually one of those smaller meals, and I’ve found different options I like depending on the time of day, my activity level, and nutritional goals. For a meal replacement, I like a Quest bar. It’s got 20 grams of whey protein, 10 grams of fat, and 13 grams of fiber, so it’s very filling and low in net carbs. If I do want more carbs than protein, I go for a GoMacro bar, which is plant-based too. You don’t have to look very far for either of these options, which makes them very convenient on-the-go.

Nutrition bars are also a topic which our resident expert, holistic nutritionist and wellness coach Sarah Wragge, gets asked about too. Prefacing her list of favorites with the statement, “Snacking is not my preferred choice of nutrition – it’s about eating meals that are balanced in protein, fat, and fiber, so you’re not hungry every couple hours” — did acquiesce that a nutrition bar can be a good option in a pinch. She looks for one that’s organic, plant-based, and additive-free.

Below is a combined list of our favorite nutrition bars!  Read More

A Little R&R

FOUR OF THE TOP SPORT PERFORMANCE & RECOVERY THERAPIES:
CRYOTHERAPY, ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE, GRASTON, ACUPUNCTURE

There is nothing worse for an athlete than being sidelined with an injury – many of which are not a result of trauma, but chronic overuse (believe me, I know!). With a little R&R — Relax and Recover — many of these injuries can be prevented and treated through a wide range of different therapy techniques. Here is our guide to 9 of the most popular and effective sport performance and recovery therapies — some old and some new. And as an added benefit, many are equally popular as wellness treatments for relaxation and overall wellbeing too.

CRYOTHERAPY

We first wrote about cryotherapy in 2015, when your intrepid editor decided to venture into a -238 degree chamber – yes, you heard right — before it became as widely popular as it is today. Cryotherapy was on our radar as a cutting-edge sports recovery tool, popular among top professional athletes, many of whom had their own cryochambers at home. Now cryotherapy studios can be found in everywhere and booking a session as easy as signing up for your favorite workout.  Read More

HIIT IT!

ROWGATTA

One of the new entries in the ever-expanding fitness landscape of New York City is Rowgatta – a combination rowing and strength training class. You might call it Barry’s Bootcamp meets rowing — and it fits right in with the popular HIIT style workouts that combine cardio intervals on a treadmill, heavy bag, or rower, with resistance training that’s centered around a custom designed step bench.

At Rowgatta, it’s a CrossFit reminiscent “FITBENCH” — complete with dumbbells, kettlebells, a slam ball, and resistance bands. Like Barry’s, Orange Theory, Rumble, and others in this category, Rowgatta features a night-club inspired design, colored mood lighting, and a pumping sound system. If you’re a fan of the formula, and prefer rowing over boxing or running, Rowgatta is for you!

Barry’s Bootcamp opened in 1998 and popularized High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) in a group setting. HIIT style classes are a fun, efficient, and effective way to get in shape — offering maximal results in minimal time. You get all the benefits of cardio and strength training in one 50-minute class. High Intensity Interval Training also generates a physiological reaction known as EPOC – Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption – and these total body workouts are proven to offer continual calorie and fat burning up to 36 hours after the workout is done.

What started with Barry’s Bootcamp and the treadmill, has taken off and launched the opening of a host of other HIIT studios across the country. Boxing workouts like Rumble and GRIT BXNG have added or replaced the treadmill with heavy bags (water-filled, rubber boxing bags). LIT Method and now Rowgatta, have added rowing into the mix. No matter your cardio preference, there is a HIIT class for you. Here’s our guide to the most popular:  Read More

The Plant-Based Diet Takeover

NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS FAST FOOD

I’ve got friends and family who have been vegan for years. The easiest way to understand vegan, one of them told me, is you don’t eat anything with a face. So in addition to the obvious meat, fish, and chicken — that means no dairy, eggs, and any other products that contain them. Veggie burgers, Tofurky, and soy cheese have been the basic go-to substitutions, available in a limited selection, and tailored primarily to a vegan taste palate. But all that has changed…

Go into any coffee shop or supermarket nowadays and you find menus and aisles of plant-based milks like almond, coconut, and oat — and freezer sections filled with delicious plant-based meat alternatives like Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger. Designed to taste and smell exactly like a hamburger, and engineered with the multi-faceted texture of one — these new savory “veggie” burgers are featured prominently on the menu at major fast food chains like Burger King and McDonalds – along with Beyond Sausage sandwiches at Dunkin’ Donuts and Beyond Fried Chicken at KFC. Plant-based eating has gone mainstream — and Hollywood. It was a veggies only dinner last Sunday at the Golden Globes Awards.

A recent article in the New Yorker quoted some powerful statistics on the environmental impact of eating meat. In a nutshell, agriculture consumes more freshwater than any other human activity, and nearly one-third of that water is devoted to raising livestock. One-third of the world’s arable land is used to grow feed for livestock, and cattle are responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions from the methane they produce in digestion. That’s as much each year as from all cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined! (NYT)
