The Strength to Heal

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANNE MENKE

For the past several months, I have been going to Moment Physical Therapy & Performance (Moment PT). There have been periods of clear progress, followed by days when movements that had started to feel easy have become painful again — not so much exercise, but the physical demands of a normal day. The hardest part has been understanding why my capacity seems to change from one day to the next.

“The gym is controlled stress,” explains Andy Fata-Chan, co-founder with his wife Kristianna Fata-Chan of Moment PT. “If all you did was train, you could gradually progress. But walking around the city, taking the stairs, carrying a heavy bag — they all contribute to your overall load. Add work, relationships, finances, and everything else life throws at you. Your body doesn’t distinguish between physical stress and emotional stress. It simply experiences stress.”

Physical therapy, Andy explains, isn’t about avoiding stress. It’s about gradually increasing your capacity to absorb it. Strength training, mobility work, and carefully dosed movement expand the body’s ability to tolerate more load over time. Improve mobility and the body gains more movement options. Build strength within those new ranges and stress is distributed instead of concentrated in one vulnerable area. Expose the system to manageable challenges until it learns that it is safe to move again. Read More

Nike x Hyperice

Nike and Hyperice are taking recovery to the next level with the introduction of the Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide that combines Nike’s signature Air Zoom cushioning with Hyperice’s heat and vibration technology. Designed for athletes after training, competition, travel, or long days on their feet, the Hyperslide reflects both companies’ belief that performance doesn’t end when the competition or training stops.

As recovery has become an essential part of every athlete’s routine, the focus has shifted to solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life. The Air Zoom Hyperslide is designed with exactly that in mind — making it easier to recover wherever you are, whether you’re leaving the gym, walking through the airport, or simply relaxing at home.

The Air Zoom Hyperslide pairs a low-profile, full-length Air Zoom sole for soft, responsive comfort with targeted Hyperice heat and vibration across the top of the foot. With three levels of heat (up to 117°F/47°C) and three vibration settings, athletes can customize a 15-minute recovery session directly from the pod or through the Hyperice app. Read More

The new documentary SURFILMUSIC chronicles bestselling artist Jack Johnson’s evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world-renowned musician. The film follows his early years, growing up surfing in Hawaii, to lifelong friendships formed on the waves and surf films like Thicker Than Water and September Sessions made with friends.

Filmmaking was the foundation for expanding his creative life into music. Time spent reflecting on moments spent in and out of the water became the inspiration for many of his most famous songs.

Blending beautiful, rare footage from Johnson’s personal family archives and those formative surf films, with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how the surf experiences, friendships, and adventures shaped the sound and stories behind the music. Read More

Selfish: A Journey of Self Discovery

THE FAHERTY FAMILY

I first met Kerry Docherty at a Faherty event last fall. Kerry is the Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer of Faherty, the coastal lifestyle apparel brand she helped build alongside her husband, Alex Faherty, and his twin brother, Mike. During our conversation, Kerry told me about a book she had written, a memoir, that was coming out in April. The title was Selfish.

Kerry began sharing the details of the book, and I was immediately riveted as she disclosed the relationship she had with another man — and how Alex discovered what had happened. While the relationship was never physical, it crossed the line emotionally. I couldn’t wait to read the book.

Faherty was founded by Alex and Mike Faherty, twin brothers who had dreamed of starting a clothing company when they were kids. Faherty launched not too long after Kerry and Alex got married, and Kerry joined the company as one of its co-founders shortly after that. Perhaps this would not have been her first choice, as she gave up her own career to do so.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the repercussions would be when the book came out, not just with hers and Alex’s family, but at Faherty too — with its corporate board, employees, and customers. But here she was with Alex at the Faherty event, still together and looking happy. Read More

Surf’s Down

Now on view at Gagosian is Upside Down, an exhibition of new fin sculptures by Alex Israel at the Davies Street gallery in London. The four sculptures, enlarged versions of those found on surfboards, allude to both Southern California surf culture and postwar Los Angeles art history. Each work is titled after a beloved pop song, adding to its aura of collective longing and nostalgia.

Carved from Plexiglas and rendered in varying degrees of reflectivity and transparency, the sculptures’ pop-inflected colors evoke the commercial aesthetics employed by surf brands to convey the freedom and optimism long associated with Southern California’s coastal lifestyle. The works’ sleek production and emphasis on physical and perceptual experience invite dialogue with LA’s Finish Fetish and Light and Space movements of the 1960s. Read More

The World Cup Wife

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANNE MENKE

Brazilian content creator Gabrielle Figueiredo has built an international following through a distinctive aesthetic that blends fashion, sport, beauty, and lifestyle. Married to Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães — one of the stars of both the Premier League and the Brazilian National Team — she offers her audience a unique glimpse into life inside one of the world’s most passionate sporting cultures. As Brazil begins its journey toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gabrielle, known to her followers simply as Gabi, has the world’s attention.

Gabi has become a star in her own right. Through a mix of behind-the-scenes family moments and match-day content, she has cultivated a highly engaged community drawn to both her authenticity and her fashion-forward approach to football culture. Together, she and Gabriel are raising their four-year-old daughter while balancing life in the spotlight.

Gabi perfectly embodies the STYLE of SPORT ethos, celebrating the intersection of sport and fashion. Glamorous and sexy, but sporty and fun, she has become particularly known for her popular Instagram series, Getting Ready with Gabi, where she shares her match-day looks. Mixing Arsenal gear with her own cool street style — often anchored by a custom Arsenal leather biker jacket — she has transformed football fashion into a signature personal brand. Read More

Under Pressure: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

MD HYPERBARIC

From elite athletes and biohackers to fitness enthusiasts, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has become one of the hottest trends in recovery and wellness. Originally developed to treat serious medical conditions such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and non-healing wounds, HBOT has increasingly moved into the mainstream, where it is promoted for sports recovery, athletic performance, cognitive health, and overall wellbeing.

Inside a hyperbaric chamber, atmospheric pressure is increased to levels two to three times above normal sea level pressure, allowing the body to absorb significantly more oxygen than it can under ordinary conditions. HBOT is often prescribed after surgery because the increased oxygenation in the bloodstream helps promote cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and stimulate tissue regeneration. But its potential benefits extend beyond medical recovery and have numerous overall health benefits as well.

The protocols for treatment, however, and the chambers themselves, differ significantly between a medical facility and a wellness spa. I have done HBOT several times at Restore Hyper Wellness. A recent visit to MD Hyperbaric gave me the opportunity to experience how a medical-grade treatment differs from the wellness version. Read More

Costa Brazil Opens Flagship

COSTA BRAZIL AT HUDSON YARDS

Costa Brazil, the Amazon-sourced beauty brand by Francisco Costa, has just opened their first Flagship Store at Hudson Yards in New York City. This spacious location invites shoppers and passers-by to experience the essence and spirit of Costa Brazil in an evocative and immersive environment.

Costa Brazil was created when Francisco Costa left Calvin Klein in 2016, after 13 years as the brand’s Creative Director. A native of Brazil, Costa returned to his homeland and found himself deep within the rainforest of the Amazon — not on the luxury cruise he had originally planned with friends — but with an indigenous tribe called the Ywanawas. It was here he discovered the powerful therapeutic ingredients that are the essence of Costa Brazil products: mineral-rich Kaya; antioxidant-packed Cacay; and the aromatic Breu.

The Flagship Store offers the full range of Costa Brazil products, spanning skin and haircare, fragrance and home, while also debuting two exclusive products: detoxifying and energizing Breu Soap Bar, and hand-crafted Breu Incense. This comprehensive assortment allows visitors to fully engage with the brand’s holistic approach to beauty and well-being rooted in nature. Read More

Redo Market

Redo Market is a vintage show and marketplace in Southern California showcasing more than 200 vendors with an eclectic mix of surf, skate, clothing, jewelry, home goods, art, and more. Held in multiple locations in Orange County, the most recent in Dana Point took over four city blocks in the historic Lantern District, drawing more than 20,000 people. I was one of them, there for a Surfer Stories book signing in the middle of it all.

Redo Market is the brainchild of Randy Hild (top middle and below), a surf industry veteran with a storied career in action sports that spans more than 30 years. I first met him when I was an editor at Condé Nast during the launch of Sports for Women, when he was Global Creative Director at Quiksilver. Hild was the visionary force behind Roxy, building it into one of the largest and most influential brands in surf – and sparking my own enduring fascination with its history, culture, and style. The Vending Machine Robot

Last week, a vending machine appeared in my office…

Not the typical clear-front dispensary with the usual snacks, or those upgraded coffee machines with cappuccino or latte offerings. This was something else: a supersized, sleek and modernized, all-in-one beverage machine. On the menu were matcha lattes, specialty fruit teas, and coffee drinks like Iced Caramel Cappucino and Hot Mocha– everything ordered and purchased through an app.

The machine is a product of G&A Robot, a Canadian company just entering the U.S. market. Their robotic beverage machines craft over 100 customizable drinks. Globally, there are already 450 machines stationed across Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands. This one, just installed in the co-working space we happen to share in New York City, is their first in the U.S. Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami are next.

Although it’s designed to be self-explanatory, Michael Lee, the G&A Robot CEO of America, who is heading up the U.S. expansion, walked me through how to order a beverage. I chose the Mango Milk Tea. Right away a big attraction was the ability to control the sugar level. A small detail, but one that felt very nutritionally now. Read More

Is Triathlon Camp the New Spa Vacation?

LUCY DANZIGER AT THE NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER POOL

For some people, the answer is yes!

Lucy Danziger and I have been friends, colleagues, and sport buddies for over 30 years. When she texted me pictures from a triathlon training camp, all excited and calling it her version of a spa vacation, I asked her to please write a story for SOS! Lucy, a former competitive triathlete who still loves to train like one, made me want to join her at the National Training Center (NTC) – and I’m not a triathlete (although I do enjoy all three sports). But as Lucy shares in her story, all are welcome here, from Olympic athletes to everyday athletes who just want to train like one…

Swim, Bike, Run, Bliss by Lucy Danziger

Some people dream of spa getaways — plush robes, cucumber water, and hours of pampering. Not me. My version of luxury? Three workouts a day — swim, bike, run — in any order, with little else on the schedule except eating and sleeping. So when I headed to a weeklong triathlon training camp at the National Training Center (NTC) in Clermont, Florida, it felt like I’d checked into paradise… just with a lot more sweat and “real” athletes everywhere you look.

Once upon a time I could call myself a competitive triathlete, since getting on the podium was a realistic goal and I would do about four long-course races a year, along with several shorter ones. But these days I’m just looking to get fit and healthy, have fun, and get back in the game, even if my “running” is now a steady trot due to an old ski injury and achy knee from surgery in my twenties. Everyone in triathlon has a strength (always biking for me) and a limiter (it used to be swimming, but now instead of getting out of the water with the backstrokers, I manage to arrive at my bike rack in the middle of the pack). Seed Oils: The Hot Topic

Last summer I hosted a dinner for my book, Surfer Stories. Asking my guests, world famous surfer Garrett McNamara and family among them, if they had any dietary restrictions, he said, “No seed oils, please”. This was the first time I’d heard that, but have increasingly since then, and noticed a trend with snack foods promoting their use of beef tallow instead of seed oils.

For many years, seed oils like safflower, corn, and canola were considered the healthy oil of choice, positioned as a better alternative to animal fats like butter, lard, beef tallow, and other saturated fats. In the 1950’s, the American Heart Association had recommended polyunsaturated fats from seed oils as part of a heart-healthy diet. But recently seed oils have come under fire — and now thought to be a far worse alternative.

In ancient societies, animal fats were the primary sources of fat in human diets. Their essential nutrients like fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, and omega-3 fatty acids, were crucial for various bodily functions, including brain development, immune function, and hormone regulation. Read More

The Quarterback Kid

QUARTERBACK CHRISTIAN WRAGGE

Christian Wragge is a 9-year-old football player with an arm of an NFL quarterback. I’m exaggerating, but when you see him throw, the ball spiraling through the air for almost half the length of a football field, hanging airborne before it finally drops into the arms of a young receiver, it’s jaw-dropping. He’s in third grade.

I’ve known Christian since he was 3 years old. His mom is our contributing nutrition editor, Sarah Wragge, and his father is CBS News New York This Morning co-anchor Chris Wragge. I follow them both on Instagram, and when Chris started posting videos of Christian playing football, I became obsessed. Yes, they are filmed like NFL highlight reels, but I couldn’t believe the arm on this kid. We’ve done sport phenoms and prodigy stories before, but this one might be the greatest story yet to be told. Read More

Vagus Nerve Stimulation was originally used as a medical neuromodulation treatment for epilepsy and seizure control, as well as severe psychological disorders such as depression. The invasive VNS devices used were surgically implanted pulse generators that resembled a pacemaker, and shown to have about 50% efficacy, which was considered beneficial as a treatment.

In the past decade, the effect of VNS on general psychological and cognitive functioning has gained a lot of attention in the health and wellness space, with the introduction of non-invasive VNS methods shown to be capable of activating the vagus nerve, similarly to the invasive techniques, for overall wellbeing. 3 PAIRS OF J.SKIS, FROM TOP: THE JOYRIDE PSYCHONAUT, TALLBOY X J COLLAB; THE BEST FRIEND GOOD DAY, FANK X J COLLAB; THE ALLPLAY NIGHTLIFER, MATT STIKKER X J COLLAB

Back in the 1990’s, skiing was a dying sport, while snowboarding was thriving. The only skis available then were long, straight, and made for racing. If you were a kid named Jason Levinthal, who wanted to be doing what snowboarders were but on skis, you decided to reinvent the sport.

Twin tip skis are an everyday site on the slopes now and have made freestyle skiing as popular as snowboarding. Skiers are able to pull off the tricks and jumps once the domain of snowboarders only. Jason Levinthal is the founder of J.Skis, and has not only changed the way people ski, but how skis are sold. Jason was also the founder of Line skis, the first twin-tip skis, the company he launched in 1995, after creating a prototype for a senior year school project. Originally, they were short skis that looked like mini snowboards called skiboards. Read More

Is “Microdosing” GLP-1 Right for You?

SERENA WILLIAMS IS RO’s GLP-1 AMBASSADOR

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy have completely transformed the weight loss industry since their introduction and are seemingly part of the news cycle every day. The latest is the launch of Wegovy in a pill form, with others slated to follow. These drugs have reshaped not just the landscape of obesity treatment, but metabolic health beyond the scale.

Almost all of us have friends and family whose dramatic weight loss has been hard to miss as a result of GLP-1s. Then there have been the powerhouse celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, and athletes like Serena Williams, inspiring an even wider population to take these drugs, now readily available on numerous telehealth platforms like AgelessRx, Noom, and RO, for which Serena Williams is the spokesperson. Recent polls indicate 1 in 10 adults in the US have used a GLP-1 drug for weight loss or diabetes.

GLP-1 drugs were initially designed to help manage blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, but along with that came the side effect of dramatic weight loss. That led to the development of these medications specifically for weight management. Although there are many brand names for GLP-1s, there are essentially only two drugs, semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both mimic the hormone GLP-1, or glucagon like peptide 1 (tirzepatide mimics both GLP-1 and GIP, or gastric inhibitory polypeptide hormone) which controls the release of insulin from the pancreas and regulates blood sugar levels. They also slow gastric emptying so you stay full longer, reducing appetite and increasing satiety. Read More

Everyday Objects

LEAFY LOUNGERS COASTER SET OF 6; THE SLICE AND DICE PIZZA HATCHET; THE ESCAR-SOAP DISPENSER; THE CHILL PEAS HOT-COLD PACK

The Cactus Makes Perfect Scrub Brush, Swipe and Wipe Credit Card Squeegee, Slice and Dice Pizza Hatchett… these are just a few of the everyday objects turned cartoon characters in the Everyday Objects catalog. What does this have to do with sport? Nothing really, other than it’s the brainchild of surfer and The Swell Season surf podcast host Tyler Breuer, and just turns ordinary things into extra-ordinary fun!

The Everyday Objects catalog is a pop art comic book, in which Tyler is a character, and tells the evolution of Everyday Objects. The story of each product creation is brought to life in an animated cartoon. The products themselves turn 2D into 3D with Lichtenstein-esque graphics. So amused by it all, I had to find out more – and as I had been a guest on The Swell Season last summer, I invited him to be a guest here on SOS…

STYLE OF SPORT: This catalog and these products are so silly and fun. We could all use some comic relief right now. Tell us how it all came to be. Read More

JANUARY 1: DHARMA YOGA

Yoga is hardly a new wellness practice. It has been around for over 5000 years, originating in ancient India. Modern yoga started to gain popularity in the 60’s and 70’s as part of the hippie culture, but exploded in participation in the 80’s and 90’s as a fitness movement, the physical style and focus very different from its spiritual and meditative origins.

Sri Dharma Mittra is 86 years young and has been teaching the original practice of “astanga” yoga for over a half-century at his school in New York and around the world, He opened his first yoga studio in 1975, long before yoga was as ubiquitous as it is today, and continues to share the pathway to radiant health and spiritual enlightenment from the wisdom accumulated from years of practice.
