For Whatever Ails: Take Magnesium

Not sleeping? Take magnesium. Constipated? Take magnesium. Muscle cramps? You guessed it… take magnesium. It seems to be everyone’s answer to what ails you. “Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body”, says Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Certified Nutritionist, Gut Health Specialist. “It is the number one neuroprotector of your brain, and is responsible for hundreds of enzyme reactions throughout your body, “yet it’s the single biggest nutritional deficiency I see in most people.”

Getting enough magnesium is essential, and supplementation can help bridge the gap when you’re not meeting your needs through your diet. But a trip down the supplement aisle reveals a dizzying array of options: magnesium citrate, glycinate, oxide, malate, and more. Same mineral, different formulations. So what does each actually do? Here’s our guide to decoding the magnesium menu.

MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE — SLEEP SUPPORT

Magnesium glycinate, also called bisglycinate, helps promote muscle relaxation, stress reduction, and better sleep. For replenishing low magnesium overall, Dr.Gioffre’s go-to is chelated magnesium bisglycinate because binding magnesium to glycine helps support absorption while keeping it generally gentle on the gut. Glycine supports GABA activity in the brain, reducing nervous system activity to produce a soothing effect.

MAGNESIUM CITRATE — CONSTIPATION & GENERAL SUPPLEMENTATION

As a citrus byproduct, magnesium citrate can boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and increase antibody production. If constipation is the complaint, magnesium citrate is one of the most familiar options. It draws water into the intestines, softening stool and making it easier to pass — but dose matters. Its bowel-moving benefits can also mean diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

MAGNESIUM OXIDE — CONSTIPATION, HEARTBURN & MIGRAINE PREVENTION

Magnesium oxide is absorbed less efficiently than several other forms, but it still has useful applications. A more powerful laxative than magnesium citrate, it is used in products for constipation and acid indigestion. The trade-off is its tendency to cause diarrhea. It is also commonly recommended by clinicians for migraine prevention. Migraine regimens can involve doses above the usual supplemental limit, so it is advised to consult with a physician.

MAGNESIUM L-THREONATE — MEMORY & SLEEP RESEARCH

Often marketed as the “brain” magnesium, L-threonate is being studied for cognitive function and sleep. Small human trials have reported improvements in some measures of cognition, sleep quality, and daytime functioning. Research also finds it can break down adrenaline and other stimulating neurotransmitters to reduce stress and anxiety.

MAGNESIUM MALATE — ENERGY & RECOVERY

Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid, a compound involved in the body’s energy-producing processes. Though participation in energy production does not automatically translate into an energy boost, it is popular in supplements promoted for fatigue, muscle discomfort, and recovery.

MAGNESIUM TAURATE — HEART HEALTH

Magnesium taurate pairs magnesium with taurine and is often promoted for cardiovascular support, including healthy blood pressure. It also calms the nervous system, offering a soothing effect. However there is not enough strong human evidence to recommend this particular form for treating high blood pressure or palpitations.

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE — REPLENISHING MAGNESIUM

Magnesium chloride is a relatively well-absorbed oral form used to help increase magnesium intake. It is available as well as a cream, oil, or spray, and may be effective in reducing muscle discomfort and soreness. For someone who needs supplemental magnesium, absorption and digestive tolerance are more useful considerations than promises of a specialized benefit.

MAGNESIUM SULFATE (EPSOM SALT)

Many of us are familiar with Epsom salt, but not everyone knows that it contains magnesium and sulfate. It is commonly added to baths to relieve sore muscles, aching joints, cramps, and other types of pain.

MAGNESIUM BLENDS

Magnesium complexes combine several forms in a single supplement, offering support for everything from sleep to muscle recovery. Dr. Gioffre’s own Acid-Kicking Magnesium combines magnesium citrate, bisglycinate, and taurate. When choosing any supplement be sure to look for a third-party certification seal: USP (verifies that the listed ingredients are present in the correct amounts and will dissolve properly in your body; NSF International confirms label accuracy and tests for heavy metals or unlisted substances.
