52 Weeks of Fitness! Tennis Everyone?

Welcome to Week 1 of 52 Weeks of Fitness! Unlike my usual January marathon of 31 Days of Fitness, with a different sport, workout, or wellness activity every day, I’m stretching it out through the year with one new thing every week. That’s 52 different health and fitness activities in the year to come. We’re kicking it off with tennis. The first major of the year, the Australian Open, starts next week and I’m tuning up my game…

While everyone has been talking about Pickleball, tennis is alive and well, and you’re never too old to learn. Group adult instruction programs and classes like Drill & Play and Cardio Tennis are offered for all levels at almost any tennis club, at many of which you don’t need to be a member to join a class. It’s a fun and social approach to the game, with a non-stop format that makes it a great workout too.

WEEK 1: GROUP TENNIS CLASSES

I took the tram out to Roosevelt Island last Sunday to check out the Drill & Play class at the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club. One of 3 Advantage Tennis Clubs in NYC, they offer extensive group programming for any level: from total beginners to seasoned pros, from instruction to competitive match play. It’s a great way to improve your game, strokes, and strategy. They are even mixers in the evening with cocktails served, where beyond just tennis, it’s an opportunity to socialize and meet people.

I took the intermediate level 3.0-3.5 class. Classes are ranked with the official USTA system most clubs use. Although I’ve played tennis my whole life, I haven’t played that much lately and wanted to brush up on my game. Says Josie Underwood, Sales and Communications Coordinator at Advantage Tennis Clubs, “You’re coming in to play against yourself as much as you’re playing against other people.”

The 2-hour class was non-stop, with two courts going, 6 students and 1 instructor on each who was running us through drills, points, and doubles play. Without a lot of down time in between, it was a fun way to work on my game and hit a lot of balls.

Classes range in price, and off-peak times are a great way to save money. The class I took would have been $99 for non-members, but went down to $58 Off-Peak. For a two-hour skills and drills, tennis workout, that seems like a pretty good deal, especially when you consider the price of a boutique fitness class. And speaking of deals…
