Fly Fishing Demystified

Now available in Patagonia retail stores and online is a new book entitled Simple Fly Fishing: Techniques for Tenkara and Rod & Reel, authored by the founder and owner of the company, Yvon Chouinard, in collaboration with Craig Mathews and Mauro Mazzo. It is part of a campaign being launched by the company designed to demystify fly fishing and make the sport more accessible. The book is the centerpiece of the Patagonia Simple Fly Fishing kit, which contains a tenkara-style fly fishing rod, box of flies, line and leader, and quick set up guide.

The tenkara fly rod contained in the kit has no reel and comes from a centuries-old Japanese fly fishing technique. “This is for the young person who has wanted to learn, but is intimidated by the complexity, elitism and expense of fly fishing,” notes Yvon Chouinard. “This is for the woman and her daughter who are put off by the image of the testosterone-fueled, good-old-boy bass and trout fisherman who turned the ‘contemplative pastime’ into a competitive combat sport. And for the long-time angler who has everything and wants to replace all that stuff with skill, knowledge and simplicity.”

The philosophy behind the campaign comes from Chouinard’s belief that the way towards mastery of any endeavor is to work towards simplicity, and to replace complex technology with knowledge. Patagonia’s Simple Fly Fishing kit aims to achieve just that. Chouinard has found this incredibly simple technique to be highly effective at catching even the most difficult, highly selective fish. 9 PERFECT PUFFER VESTS

A few weeks ago, we brought you our 9 FAVORITE PUFFER JACKETS. We are back with our 9 favorite puffer vests. The down, or alternately insulated, vest is the perfect way to get an extra layer of warmth. With so many colors, cuts, fills, weights and quilting to choose from, we thought we’d share 9 of our favorites. So whether you’re looking for a super sporty style or something more refined, we’ve got the vest for you.

ROW 1: ELIZABETH ROBERTS ELIOT VEST $450. With it’s tapered silhouette, cap sleeve and belted waist, this is a most fashionable down vest, but it has host of technical features as well. It is made with a Schoeller® water and stain repellent stretch fabric, has multiple hidden and side seam pockets, including their signature Smartsheild™ protective pocket for your phone. THE NORTH FACE THERMOBALL VEST $149. As an alternative to down, the Thermoball line uses Primaloft insulation constructed to imitate down with low weight high loft clusters. This synthetic insulation achieves the warmth equivalent of 600-fill down and retains heat even when wet. MARMOT JENA VEST $150. Available in 7 colors, this 800 fill goose down vest delivers a whole lot of warmth to the core.

ROW 2: BOGNER FIRE & ICE DOWN VEST CALI-D $449. This feather-light bright neon down vest features a contrast color lining and removable hood, which can be adorned with fur trim Pelz, sold separately. Available in 5 colors. NIKE AEROLOFT RUNNING VEST $180. Insulation meets ventilation with this tech infused lightweight down vest. Zones of perforated ventilation are alternated with zones of lofted insulation to keep heat in and let moisture out. UNIQLO ULTRALIGHT DOWN HOODED VEST $49.90. For the price, this very warm vest with its down-filled hood can not be beat. It’s incredibly light and thin; a high collar protects from cold wind; and it stows easily in its attached pouch.

ROW 3: CANADA GOOSE FREESTYLE VEST $275. Available for both men and women in a plethora of colors, this down vest is durable and well-insulated. Cut longer in the back for greater coverage, and with a wealth of practical storage pockets, this is one warm and functional extra layer. PATAGONIA NANO PUFF VEST $149. The Nano Puff Vest uses PrimaLoft ONE insulation for superb compressibility, featherlight weight and most importantly warmth. The 100% recycled ripstop shell is windproof and water repellent. MONCLER GHANY GILET $539. Warm, chic and sporty, this red shiny vest is a Moncler classic.

A River Runs Through It

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Patagonia on a trip to Idaho for a couple of days to learn how to flyfish. I jumped at the opportunity, having wanted to try the sport ever since seeing Brad Pitt in “A River Runs Through It”, and guessing a major swag bag was in store. I was told the founder of the company, Yvon Chouinard, who was writing a book called “Simple Fly Fishing”, would be there and that we would be learning a new technique of flyfishing called Tenkara. What I didn’t know was that “YC”, as he is called, would be hanging out with us the entire time and be our teacher.

Yvon Chouinard is a legend in the outdoor industry and sport world, and a noted environmentalist. His accomplishments as a rock climber, surfer, kayaker, falconer and fly fisherman are impressive, and his contributions to those sports are recognized worldwide. Patagonia is considered one of, if not the, most successful outdoor brands. Their integration and promotion of environmentalism as essential component of good business practice is a founding tenet of the company and of particular focus at present. A recent Patagonia ad in the New York Times read “It’s Fashion Week, when the design world turns its attention to what’s new. We’d like to point out something better: what lasts. While we’re proud of the quality and performance of Patagonia clothes, every new thing we make – everything anyone makes – costs nature more than we now know how to repay.” This ad launched their “Worn Wear” blog, featuring vintage Patagonia clothes, their owners and adventures, in addition to used-clothing sections in several of their stores. The campaign is part of their Common Threads Partnership to reduce consumption and encourage repair and recycling. Ironcially, the more Patagonia tells people not to buy new products, the more people buy. Read More

Patagonia at 40: The Legacy Collection

CLICK FOR SNEAK PEEK OF THE LEGACY COLLECTION

In celebration of their upcoming 40th anniversary, the designers at Patagonia decided to go back to where it all started. They culled from the archives and dug up their most iconic pieces, 9 of which have been reinterpreted and reproduced for the Legacy Collection debuting in September.

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, family, friends, and many of the original crew were asked to select their favorite pieces from over the years. All were pretty much in agreement about which ones to bring back. “It’s really just a moment that you are actually doing your activity”, says designer John Rapp, “most of it is prepping”. He describes this as a “lifestyle” collection, inspired by those technical pieces but created to “get you there and back”.
