Seems like every fashion and style journal you read there is Virgil Abloh, the man behind hot fashion label, Off-White. Last month saw the limited release of his collection with Nike, “Ten Icons Reconstructed”, one of the most buzzed about sneaker collaborations to date. Originally only five styles were available to a lucky few Nike raffle winners, but a wide release date of all ten has now been set for November 9th at select stockists.

VERUSHKA IN VOGUE 1965; NIKE TECH WINDJAMMER JACKET 2014

 

We have had our eye on the new bright and graphic Nike Tech Windrunner Jacket, and by chance stumbled upon this image of Verushka from Vogue, photographed by Henry Clarke in 1965. Whether purely coincidental or direct inspiration, the resemblance of the windbreaker to the dress is uncanny. The pink, lavender and green color blocking with black taped seams, look as fab on this mod dress as they do on this modern running jacket, and the blue of the Mediterranean sky is echoed in the jacket’s hood.

The Nike Tech Windrunner Jacket is in fact one of the first pieces of apparel Nike created in 1978 when the company was known only for its footwear. This updated version is a statement piece designed to protect against the elements. It features moisture wicking Dri-Fit fabric, an adjustable scuba hood, raglan sleeves, a stretch hem, and cuffs with thumbholes for high performance style.

THE NIKE TIGHT OF THE MOMENT – MIDNIGHT CRAFTWORK

 
Nike’s collaboration with Japanese artist Yuko Kanatani continues with the second in a series of three limited editions titled “Nike Tight of the Moment”. Nike designers enlisted the highly sought-after Yuko Kanatani to create illustrations based on a body map provided by the Nike Sport Research Lab. The map uses athlete-informed data to show the location of muscle heating and cooling zones. Through experimentation with patterns, colors, and inspirations unique to the artist, the Nike Tight of the Moment highlights the intersection of athletic performance and artistic design, and celebrates the body in motion.

The World Track & Field Championships are currently being held in Moscow and Usain Bolt is continuing to reign supreme as the fastest man on earth. Meanwhile, Nike has produced a selection of retro-styled Santa Monica Track Club tees and tanks for both men and women. These shirts are reminders of one of the greatest sprinters and long jumpers in Track & Field history, Carl Lewis, and the club for which he ran.

The Santa Monica Track Club was founded in 1972 as a post-collegiate track club whose primary purpose was to develop athletes for the Olympics, World Championships and international Track & Field competition. By the 1980s, the team was a major player in Track & Field, with its members setting numerous World and National records. The brightly colored Santa Monica Track Club sunburst logo became the recognizable icon of these elite athletes.

Carl Lewis joined the team in 1979 and was the dominant sprinter and long jumper in the sport from 1981 to the early 1990s. He won 10 Olympic medals, including 9 gold, and 10 World Championships medals, including 8 gold. His world record in the indoor long jump has stood since 1984 and his 65 consecutive victories in the long jump, achieved over a span of 10 years, is one of the most impressive undefeated streaks in any sport.

The club continues today to develop world class Track & Field Athletes, still helmed by its founder Joe Douglas.

Fly Free

First came the Nike Free, a super flexible, minimal running shoe, designed to support the foot’s natural movement during the stride. Introduced about 10 years ago, the shoe has become one of the biggest sellers in swoosh history among athletes and fashionistas alike.

Then came the Nike Flyknit about a year ago, available in both a race and training model, revered for its knit structure and resulting precision fit. While Track & Field superstar Allyson Felix may train in this shoe, it is the beautiful tapestry of the interwoven threads, that have established it as another winner among the fashion set.

Debuting next week, August 1 to be precise, is the eagerly anticipated combination of these two styles, merging into one as the Nike Free Flyknit. The shoe features the sole of the Free 5.0, combined with an extra elasticized Flyknit upper. While I haven’t seen the shoe yet, if the pictures do it justice, I have a feeling this one will become another favorite among runners and sneakerheads alike. Falling into both categories myself, I can’t wait to get my hands, or should I say feet, on a pair!

The fortnight at Wimbledon is now underway and for the next two weeks we will watch the classic style of tennis whites in play. It is a timeless look and quite sophisticated when mixed with accents of black and gray. This is the trend in tenniswear this season. Very much in keeping with the spring/summer fashion trends, the designs are bold and graphic, featuring a palette of white, black and the shades in between. Instead of featuring just a single topic as we have been doing (i.e. bikes, sneakers or sunglasses), we are putting it all together with a mix of our favorite sporty things.
