The Toggle Coat

toggle coat by saint laurent and j.crew

toggle coat by y-3 and merrell

The toggle or duffle coat is a sporty classic for both men and women. It is a perennial favorite of fashion houses and outdoor brands alike, and owes its popularity to the British Royal Navy who made the coat standard issue during World War I. The distinguishing features of the duffle coat were designed for functionality. The wooden toggles could be easily fastened and unfastened while wearing gloves in cold weather at sea and the oversized hood offered enough room to wear over a Naval cap.

The same design prevails today and this fall season, brands from Saint Laurent and Burberry to Woolrich and Merrell have brought us their interpretations of this timeless classic. Here are our six picks for the season’s best toggle coats.

ROW 1: BURBERRY BRIT WOOL DUFFLE COAT $995. Available in a wide array of colors, this classic pure wool duffle coat is lined with Burberry’s iconic beige and red check. It features all the traditional details such as toggle closure, oversize flap pockets and lined hood. WOOLRICH WOMENS BRISTOL DUFFLE COAT $229. This duffle coat from the iconic heritage brand, Woolrich, is constructed with a double-faced wool blend and features a fleece-lined hood, front zipper and storm flap for extra protection against wind and cold.

ROW 2: SAINT LAURENT $2950. Hedi Slimane’s duffle coat for Saint Laurent is beautifully tailored from Italian wool and celebrates all the traditional elements of the toggle with his inimitably chic style. J.CREW CONVERTIBLE TOGGLE COAT $398. Gotta love high-low, and in the less pricier range is this classic toggle from J.Crew which features a convenient zip-off hood.

ROW 3: Y-3 LITE TAFT COAT $ 525. The Y-3 Lite Taft Coat blends traditional styling with contemporary materials. The taffeta body is padded with warm PrimaLoft insulation and accented with a toggle button placket and touches of faux leather. MERRELL HAVEN DUFFLE COAT $199. Available in 3 colors, the Haven from Merrell blends the traditional elements of the duffle coat with the reliable warmth of a winter parka. Insulated and water resistant, this wooly twill coat is very warm, with a style at ease in town or the country.

New Kids on the Block

A handful of bespoke sporting goods stores have recently opened in downtown Manhattan, displaying a distinct urban influence with their integration of design and sport. New stores like Aether NYC (shown above), Shinola, Patagonia Bowery and Best Made Company, all feature beautifully rendered and sophisticated interiors, and carry a range of refined products to match. There is no compromise on functionality, however, and these shops also offer a variety of accessories curated for the chic sporting lifestyle. Below are the four newest additions to the downtown sport landscape.

Aether’s ethos is the intergration of performance sportswear with a refined minimal aesthetic. Their product line includes a range of technical outerwear for men and women, designed to transition easily from the mountains to the street, and function with style in both. The just opened Soho store features a unique design motif of 36 wooden crates, that combined with white laminate interiors and LED lighting, frame and showcase their products. In addition to apparel, the store carries a range of sporting gear with a similar design orientation, such as the Oru folding kayak, Heimplanet Inflatable Tent, Poc Helmets and goggles, as well as photography books and other artwork.

Patagonia has just opened a lofty full service surf shop in what was formally the world famous music venue, CBGBs. Retaining much of the original architectural detail, as seen in the exposed brick, overhead beams and hardwood floors, the store features the entire Patagonia surf line and surfboards by Fletcher Chouinard Designs. The store also carries a full range of all the other Patagonia favorites, including their 40th anniversary Legacy collection.

Bird's eye view of Shinola Tribeca

Recently opened in Tribeca is the Manhattan outpost of the Detroit based Shinola company, specializing in design objects like watches, leather goods, and their signature bicycles. Shinola is a relatively young company with a long history, having been resurrected from the iconic shoe polish brand. It proudly highlights its made-in-Detroit product line and also carries an array of American made products from other like minded brands. Highlights of the spacious interior are the spiral staircase, steel catwalk and vaulted skylight in the rear, along with a cozy fashion newsstand cafe by The Smile in front.

Opened last spring Tribeca, is the retail headquarters and workshop space of Best Made Company, makers of vintage inspired outdoor sporting goods, camping supplies and tools. Even the most basic items in the store, like a their Chore Glove and Cloth Extension cords, become design objects in the context of this perfectly authentic collection of things, and their axes… yes axes, are items of lust. The store is deceptively small, with most of the merchandise housed in a small space in front. A sliding canvas curtain pulled open, however, reveals a large behind-the-scenes workspace where all the design takes place and various how-to workshop events are held as well.

The Yoga Zone

Yoga apparel is no longer just for Sun Salutations only. What was once hippie style has become the new look of daytime casual. In a movement started by Lululemon, yoga clothes are now designed for performance but are stylish enough for any time of the day. This is the new American sportswear. With their simple style and body flattering fit, slim leggings, classic camisoles, stretchy tops and cozy warm-ups can be worn all day, long after class is finished, to lunch with friends, running errands, dressed up or down for all your daily activities. Here are a few of our favorite yoga inspired pieces, designed to take you through the day.

Sportage: The Chic Sport Bag

Park Luxury Sporting Accessories makes supremely chic sport bags for golf, tennis, skiing, snowboarding, and a host of other outdoor activities. These bags are luxe, crafted from materials sourced from leading mills and ateliers around the world. Italian coated canvas, sleek vachetta leather and Scottish plaid lining are signature features, but they are designed for practicality as well. Time tested fabrics, water-resistant finishes and durable linings ensure lasting performance.

Designer and founder of Park, Anne-Marie Olson, was raised in Ottawa Canada where she grew up swimming and fishing, playing tennis and golf, and skiing in the Laurentian Mountains nearby. Summers were spent with her grandparents in the bucolic setting of Kapuskasing, Ontario, where every day was filled with sports and outdoor activities. The authenticity of the Northern-Ontario lifestyle is apparent in all her bags, and reflect a nostalgia for a time when wooden tennis rackets, plaid canteens, Hudson Bay blankets and wicker picnic baskets were the standard accessories for all outings and sporting events.

In addition to bags, Park also makes other vintage inspired items like blankets, folding chairs, flasks and a fur trimmed sleeping bag, the perfect compliments to the chic sporting life.

Summer may be over, but except for you diehards and warm weather dwellers, there is no need for the SUP season to end. From Kahuna Creations comes the Kahuna Stick, which is essentially a land paddle for your skateboard. Designed to be used with a longboard, the Kahuna Stick features a long curved rubber end with which the rider pushes themselves along in a motion similar to Stand Up Paddleboarding. The same core muscles are used and similar to SUP, it’s a great workout. Check out this VIDEO for a little demo.

Now this does require a bit more coordination than with Stand Up Paddleboarding, and falling on pavement is not as forgiving as falling in the water. However, the stick is designed to be used with a longboard, which is much more stable than a regular skateboard. Kahuna has longboards up to 59″ (almost the size of a small surfboard!), that are over a foot wide and pretty steady underfoot.

So if you’re feeling adventurous and missing those SUP days of summer, this is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy that paddling sensation in the cooler months when the water might not be so inviting.

The VW Bus: The End Of An Era

With new automotive safety restrictions in the country, Volkswagen Brazil has announced it will cease production of the Volkswagen T2 at the end of 2013. Known as the Kombi in Brazil, the van has been in production there since 1957. Brazil has been the sole country to produce this iconic Volkswagen since Germany phased it out in 1979, followed by Mexico in 1994. The T2 now has the distinction of being the longest produced vehicle in automotive history.

During the 1960’s, the Volkswagen Transporter, as it was originally named, became the recognized vehicle of the hippie generation. With its free riding spirit and live-in lifestyle, the T2 was soon adopted by the surf community as the transportation (and home for some) of choice. Read More

LT: The Life & Times of Lawrence Taylor

Now airing on Showtime is “LT: The Life & Times”, a documentary that chronicles the ups and downs of the career of NFL Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor. Nicknamed “LT”, Lawrence Taylor is arguably the best linebacker to have ever played the game and considered one of the best defensive players of all time. His tumultuous life off the field, however, brought him equal notoriety for substance abuse, illegal drug possession, and numerous resulting NFL suspensions.

Directed by 27-time Sports Emmy winner Peter Radovich, Jr., and narrated by Jon Bon Jovi, the documentary takes an in depth look at Lawrence Taylor’s life with previously untold stories from Taylor himself, his family, friends, former teammates and coaches, including Bill Parcells, for whom he won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 1987; Bill Belichick, who was the Giants defensive coach; Phil Simms, the quarterback; and even Joe Theismann, whose career he ended with that famous hit that broke his leg. Despite LT’s flaws, all seem to have genuine affection for him, Parcells in particular, based on the tenacity with which he played the game.
