Courting Beauty

Ever wonder why those pro tennis players look so good, nary a hair out of place, while running, swinging, and sweating it out on the court? Trimming the tresses and styling the locks of such top players as Rafael Nadal, Novac Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka, both on and off the court, is Julien Farel, who presides over the courts at the US Open Tennis Tournament and at his namesake Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa.

Located at the Loews Regency Hotel in NYC, the flagship Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa sits atop the home of New York’s famed “Power Breakfast”, the noted morning meeting spot for the city’s movers and shakers. The 10,000 square foot facility occupies the southern end of the hotel and is visible through the windows on the second floor, where the transition from hair salon at one end, into fitness center at the other, can be seen. Julien Farel presides over this cross-section of beauty and sport, and embodies the two himself.

JULIEN FAREL RUNNING ALONG THE EAST RIVER EARLY ON A WINTER MORNING

A lifelong athlete, Farel grew up as a competitive skier and soccer player, before getting into the sport of beauty. Rising every workday at 5am to run along the East River or ride his Peloton bike at home, this handsome Frenchman, usually attired in suit and tie, has been integrating fitness into his salons since 2008. For him the connection of beauty and sport is integral. “They work together”, says Farel. “Our clients want one-stop shopping. They want to look and feel great, inside and out.”

The Official US Open Hairstylist to the Players since 2007, Farel’s annual pop-up salon offers every player and VIPs a taste of the beauty and grooming for which he is known. For 2012 and 2013 US Open Finalist, Victoria Azarenka, who loves her hair layered off court, Farel created three braids for functional style on court. As noted for his competitive coifs is Julien Farel Anti-Aging Haircare which gets its ultimate test on the heads of these athletes. Who better to put these products through their paces than tennis players whose hair is constantly exposed to the damaging rigors of sun, sweat, and multiple washings everyday after workouts, practices, and tournaments?

Farel’s line of shampoos, conditioners, balms, and signature product, Hydrate Restore, applies the science of anti-aging skincare to the scalp. Combining Hyaluronic Acid — a molecule that carries 1000 times its weight in water — with hydrolyzed rice protein, Echinacea Stem Cell Extracts and a mineral complex designed to hydrate, replenish and protect, these anti-aging products are made to do just that. As we age, our skin and scalp lose hydration and collagen. On the skin you get wrinkles, and on the scalp, hair follicles get smaller, leading to thinning and hair loss. If you hydrate the scalp, healthy hair is the result — particularly beneficial for those who exercise or swim daily.

So if you play like a pro or want to be treated like one there is no need to wait until the US Open for the VIP treatment. Julien Farel Haircare products are available online and the Restore Salon & Spa is open 7 days a week for us amateurs too.
